4 Hot Toys For Xmas 2009

This Christmas parents are looking out for the hot trends in toys and gifts for children. This year there are many great toys that will out on the market. The interesting thing is that many new trends are going to be easier on parents’ wallets. That is because many retailers have been hurt in by the economic downturn and see the Holiday Shopping Season as the best time to recoup their losses. This makes this the perfect opportunity to get many of the items on your children’s wish list that you ordinarily may not be able to purchase. Here are some the trends that will be available this year.

A big trend to watch out is the miniaturization of popular toys and games. This is an effort for toy companies to still offer brand name toys but at reduced prices. A great example are hand held versions of popular games like BopIt and Yahtzee. This is something to look out for. So if you happen to see a smaller version of a toy your kids were looking for then make sure to get it while you can.

Another hot trend for the past couple of years have been Disney themed toys. The Disney franchise from Movies to Television and even Music has been probably a big part of how your kids spend their leisure time at home. This will mostly target the girls in your family. Make sure to look for Hannah Montana Dolls, Video Games and other products. There will also be great demand for the Disney Princesses and Fairies line of products. The main focus will be Princess Tiana of the upcoming The Princess and the Frog. Of course Tinker Bell is the head of the pack for the Disney Fairies with one DVD already out and another coming out this fall. The great thing about Disney products is that you can find them at high end stores and at your local Superstore so you should be able to find something to like.

Another big trend are green toys these are toys that are obviously made of recycled plastics. Many these toys are not only good for the environment but also good for your wallet. For example there are stuffed toys made from recycled plastic bottles such as the Fuzz That Wuzz. There is also a line of recycled plastic Trucks and Construction toys. Each of these will be well received by your children and help teach them important lesson about conservation and recycling.

Another popular choice will be games that you can move with your mind. There are two on the market right now but I will focus in on the cheaper one which can now be purchased for under $80 dollars. This a great toy and game for the entire family. Basically the Mindflex uses EEG technology. This is a technology that uses sensor placed on different parts of the head to record brainwave activity. By reacting to changes in brainwave pattern that occur when you concentrate on something it can be used to make the ball in the game levitate or descend as you please. What makes the game a keeper is the customizable course which allows you to play endless variations of the game providing hours of entertainment.

Flying RC Toys – Are They Right For You?

One of the most popular playthings you might have had when you were a kid is a remote or radio controlled toy. Remote controlled toys, or RC toys as most would prefer to call them, vary in types and forms. From land, amphibious, and airplanes, to surface ships and submarines, those toys continued to be the favorite not only among kids, but including grown-ups, particularly males. It is not therefore surprising to find grown-up men looking on with delight as their RC toys race onto an speedway, jump off ramps, or perform somersaults in the air.

One of the vaunted favorites of toy hobbyists and enthusiasts are flying toys. From helicopters and propeller driven airplanes to flying machines with jet turbine engines, there seems to be no limit as to what toys can imitate on a small scale level. If you find yourself really fascinated by these flying machines, you might want to buy one yourself. Before you do, however, there are just some things that you need to know.

Flying toys are one of the most complicated and difficult to handle. This is because it involves pushing a set of levers on the remote control transmitter in order for the RC toy to fly, hover, or perform some tricks. If you are a beginner, you may need to enroll yourself in a flying school, or undergo some in-depth tutorial with a seasoned RC flying toy pilot. Mastering the control levers on the remote control transmitter is a must since you have to know what lever to push first and which one do you press next. You also have to observe what your flying RC toy is doing before pushing any lever because if you press the wrong lever, you run the risk of crashing your flying RC toy.

Once you have learned how to work the various levers and buttons on the radio transmitter device, try to decide which of the flying toys you want to play with. There are propeller driven airplanes, the jet powered aircrafts, and helicopters. Most of these flying RC toys are gas powered, although there are still some models of propeller planes and helicopters that use battery. Modern RC fuel is a methanol based fuel that contains nitro-methane and oil. There are also some flying RC toys whose engines have spark plugs which enable them to run on regular gasoline and motor oil blend. Bear in mind, however, that gas powered flying RC toys has been known to explode in a fireball if the plane crashes on the ground.

Flying RC toys are extremely fun to play with, not only because of their capacity to lift off the ground, but also because of their ability to perform tricks in the air. All you need is a little bit of knowledge about flying them, some expansive field, and you are ready to begin exploring the skies.

Cinderella Slipper Jewellery Box

Cinderella is a popular Christmas pantomime. It’s a heart-warming tale where the handsome prince whisks the girl off her feet and saves her from her evil stepmother and the ugly sisters. There’s a lot of fun with Buttons and all the ‘He’s behind you’ traditions of a Christmas panto.

Cinderella of course looses her Glass Slipper, which is how her handsome prince eventually finds her. Every would-be princess should have one of these cute Cinderella slipper jewellery boxes, however this one is made from card and plastic not glass.

All you will need is:

Thin card, A clear round plastic bottle, paint, glue, pegs, Selotape and fur fabric. Don’t forget to print out the pattern for the pieces (the link below will take you to the pattern that you can print out).

Cut out the pattern pieces

To begin, the main part of the slippers needs to be cut out. Fold the piece of card in half and draw around the pattern piece with the ‘toe’ of the pattern on the fold of the card so that the main piece turns out to be a long symmetrical piece. Join this piece in a loop with some selotape at the heel. Curve the toe and heel as necessary to form a shoe shape. Curve the toe end and cut out a slipper sole from card using the pattern and score the fold marks. Now fold them. These folds allow the sole to fit around the shaping of the main part.

Put the sole in place on the bottom of the slipper and hold it in place with some selotape.

Cover the outside of the slipper with one layer of paper mache, to give the slipper a nice surface to paint. Once the paper mache is dry, paint the slipper in the desired colour.

Cut out a second main part, but this time put the heel on the fold. Cut out this piece to be slightly smaller all around.

Stick this main part onto a piece of fur fabric which is 1cm larger than the card all round, except at the heel shaping. Put some glue on the over hanging fabric and bend it over the card and stick it on the other side of the card. Use pegs to hold it in place until the glue dries.

Cut out a second card sole (again cut out this piece to be slightly smaller all around) and cover one side of it in fur fabric as you did for the main part.

When the glue is dry remove all the pegs. Glue the fur sole inside the slipper at the bottom. Then curve the fur main around and glue it in place inside the slipper.

To make the top of Cinderella’s slipper cut out a top piece in card and paint one side the same colour as the base. Cut out two more slightly smaller top pieces. Cover one with fur fabric as you did with the other slipper parts and leave it to dry.

Cut the top and bottom of a clear round fizzy drinks bottle and cut up the middle so that the bottle opens out flat. Wash and dry the bottle. Selotape the slipper upper to the plastic and cut it out.

Glue the marked part (Sticking Edge) of the slipper upper so that it curves round and sticks to the underside of the painted top. Use bits of Selotape to hold the plastic in place until the glue dries. Stick the third top piece over the selotape and bottle bits. Hold in place with pegs.

Finally, stick the fur-covered top on the underside of the top piece with the plastic. This is now the lid to the Cinderella jewellery box.

You could make the slipper all from card and cover it in red glitter to make a ruby slipper from the Wizard of Oz.
