Relieve Lower Back Pain the Right Way

At some time in our lives we will have lower back pain. This typically happens for a variety of reasons. It will need your immediate attention. There is not many times that when you have lower back pain that you are not going to notice it. Our back is used for most activities in our daily lives, so it is difficult for it to go unnoticed.

Here are some ways for you to relieve the pain without surgery, so you may get on with your usual activities. For you to have this type of pain you must first know what caused the problem. Then you must know what is hurt. Here are some examples:

Mattress – if you have a poor mattress, this can cause you lower back pain. A poor mattress can and will cause problems the morning when you awake. In some cases it can be so severe that you will not hardly be able to move.

Obesity – when you are carrying extra weight and pressure that is caused to your lower back muscles, can and will cause you lower back problems.

Disc problems – if you have ever had a slip disc, you know that this can cause you extreme pain.

Pregnancy – during a pregnancy you can have intense lower back pain. In fact there is labor called back labor which is quite intense.

Each of the above problems will have its own different ways to relieve the pain. You will need to see a doctor to determine what is the cause of the pain.

How to Treat and Relieve Lower Back Pain

Some of the methods listed below will help you find relief from back pain without surgery or drugs. Now there are quite a few ways to achieve back pain relief. Here are some ways to get relief from back pain without surgery.

Ice / hot patches – these will provide relief for up to 16 hours and are mainly used by back pain relief athletic due to excessive exercise.

Topical pain relief treatments – you have the natural pain relief sprays and topical pain relief ointments that can be applied to the area of the pain for some relief.

Drugs – Tylenol, Advil and Aleve will help relieve the pain, but you should consult your doctor first.

There are also magnets for pain relief. This has become a very popular method of late. There are patches and belts that have magnets built into them so you can just strap them around you so the magnets can provide the relief you need.

A lot of pain relief remedies can be found in your local store. The over the counter drugs will provide some relief. That is why you should consult your doctor to make sure you are taking the right treatment. You don’t want to guess the wrong treatment.

Treatments on how to relieve back pain are in most cases harmless. An injury to your back is another thing. Trying to diagnose your pain incorrectly due to an injury is a risk you should not take.

Tips

If you exercise and keep the back muscles strong will prevent lower back pain. If you use exercises like, yoga and Pilates that involve a bunch of stretching will help relieve the pain if you are over weight or have a muscle strain.

There are some back pains the will put you down and immobilize you until you find relief. Whenever you are having lower back pain, you need to talk to your doctor to make sure that you are doing the right things to relieve the pain. If you do this, you have a good chance to have a healthy and normal life. You want to find a way that will provide relief from the pain without surgery, that is the goal.

Easy Exercises To Manage Post-Partum Back Pain

It is not uncommon to experience post-partum back pain. Some women who sailed through pregnancy without any back pain can be disappointed to be plagued with post-partum back pain. Due to an instant weight loss of about 10-12 pounds, your center of gravity, which has shifted during pregnancy, experiences a sudden shift back again. This will affect posture and can result in post-partum back pain.

Unfortunately, your pregnant body does not return to its pre-pregnancy state overnight. It takes hard work to get back to good physical condition, but returning to your normal weight and restoring the strength of the abdominal, pelvic floor and back muscles will be key to managing post-partum back pain.

It is generally recommended that the mother should wait for at least six weeks to engage in exercise after delivery of the child. Strenuous exercise, such as jogging or heavy weight lifting should be avoided in the early stages of post-partum. However, it is safe to engage in alternatives such as walking, isometric and gentle stretching exercises. These can help you to get back into shape, facilitate the weight loss process, help manage post-partum back pain and prepare you for returning to your normal activity level.

For a start, you can try out a walking program at a suitable pace. For instance, you can walk around your neighbourhood at a comfortable pace for about twenty minutes each day. Then, you can increase your pace and distance gradually once you regained your endurance. Walking helps you tone your muscles, build endurance and burn some of the materal fat stores that developed during pregnancy in order to help you lose excess weight. These combined effects will help combat port-partum back pain.

Besides this, you can also use isometric exercises to build muscle strength without putting stress on the joints. The major muscle groups to focus on are the abdominals, buttocks, inner thighs, front thighs and upper back. For instance, when performing the exercise on your upper back, you should squeeze your shoulder blades together and press your chest forward. You should hold each contraction for 5-7 seconds; repeat 5-10 repetitions, 3 times a day.

In addition, the stretching exercises that are recommended during your pregnancy are safe to resume gradually post-partum. If you try to stretch too quickly or too far, you may feel pain due to the instability of the pelvis and spine. Instead, you should slowly stretch to the point of a comfortable pulling sensation and hold the stretch for 15-20 seconds and repeat 3 times. It is important to regain normal flexibility in order to minimize stress on the joints of the spine and pelvis.

Performing the above exercise is definitely an effective and safe way to help you manage post-partum back pain and regain your body fitness as well!

Back Pain – Can Electrical Stimulation Cure Back Pain?

There has been a lot of interest in using electrical stimulation to cure back pain. But is this really a cure or just another gadget being pushed by companies looking to make a quick dollar. In other words is there any science behind the claims. I asked my physical therapist this after he recommended that I try a battery operated unit.

Supposedly this unit is battery operated and fits onto my belt. Patches are applied to my back and connected to the belt unit. Mild electrical current is then applied blocking transmission of pain signals along the nerves. Electrical stimulation also results in promoting the release of endorphins which are natural painkillers produced by the body.

This all sounded interesting but the idea of having electrical charges shooting though my body did sound a bit dangerous and reminded me of all those electrical devices that were sold years ago that were nothing more than medical quackery. However my therapist assures me this was not the case. The electric current is very low and not dangerous and there has been a lot of solid research on the effectiveness of this apparatus. Another thing that convinced me to try it was the approval of my surgeon and my insurance company.

Is electrical simulation a cure for your aching back? Well ever situation is unique. But studies do indicate that electrical stimulation can be part of an over all treatment program. Now this device doesn’t take the place of other treatments such as losing weight, physical therapy and exercise. How it allows the patient to participate in these therapies without pain or at least with a minimum of pain. Whether the device is for you depends on your situation and your doctors okay. I will stress however that whatever option you take it is important to also follow a program or system of exercise that is designed specifically for your condition and has a proven tract record of success.

Back Stretching Exercises – Three to Get You Loosened Up

Are you suffering from discomfort from back pain? Does your back do nothing but give you problems at all times of the day? If you answered yes, it may be time to see a doctor, but in the mean time, you can try some of these back stretching exercises to see if you just need to stretch it out!

Make sure when you are using these stretching exercises that you do it nice and slowly in fluid motions. Do not jerk or twist to hard or you could end up doing more damage than good. Just take your time and remember to hold the positions at the finish as this is when the stretching and loosening of the muscles will take place. Start by trying to hold the poses for 3 to 5 seconds and working your way up to 10 seconds as you get more comfortable and your back begins to loosen up.

Stand with your feet flat on the floor, legs spread shoulder width apart.

Next take your arms and hold them straight out.

Rotate your body to the left until you can feel the stretch in your back.

Hold this position for 3 to 5 seconds. Next, rotate back to starting position and stop. Then, just rotate to the right in the same manner. Repeat this process 5 to 10 times on each side.

As you begin to loosen up, hold the position a little longer. Again, make sure it is fluid and not in a jerking fashion.

Another very simple exercise to stretch that lower back is to stand straight up with your legs spread shoulder distance.

Now take the palms of your hands and reach around your back and rest them in the lower back.

Slowly arch your back while using your hands as support. Don’t push with your hands, they are there for support. There will be a little bit of natural push and this is fine.

Stretch until you feel the pull in your lower back.

Hold this position for 3 to 5 seconds. Next, rotate back to starting position and stop. Then, just repeat this process 5 to 10 times.

Another more advanced stretch is to sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Now, choose one leg and slowly bend it as you bring it in to you. Stop when your foot on the bent leg is even with the knee cap of the leg that is still straight out.

Now lift the bent legs foot and raise it over the straight leg and put it foot flat down on the opposite side of the straight legs knee cap.

Once you have done this, now take your elbow from the bent legs side and place the back of the elbow on the far side of the bent legs knee cap.

Keeping the bent leg very stationary, use the elbow against the knee cap to help turn yourself and stretch your lower back.

Hold this position for 3 to 5 seconds. Next, rotate back to starting position and stop. Switch legs. Then, just rotate to the other side in the same manner. Repeat this process 5 to 10 times on each side.

While there are many different stretches you can do to work on your lower back, this is two very easy ones and one more advanced.

Most importantly, work slowly and don’t try to do more than is comfortable or over exert yourself.

Back pain ails many more people than you think. You aren’t alone and there are some things you CAN do about it!

Back Pain – 2 Exercises to Strengthen the Back

Back pain is an increasing problem with as many as 8 out of 10 people suffering from some form of back pain in their lives. Back pain can be caused by many reasons that can include being overweight, having a poor posture or sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time.

However, many back problems could have been solved by making simple lifestyle changes. Many people lead a sedentary lifestyle that involves little to no exercise. This results in the bodies core muscle groups to become weak. The core muscle groups are very important as they protect and support the back and spine. When these become weak and out of shape the back, neck and spine becomes more prone to injury.

It is important to prevent or control back pain by ensuring you strengthen your core muscles. The following are 2 stretching exercises that can help you achieve this.

The Back Flexion:

Begin by lying flat on your back on a comfortable level surface. Bend both your knees with the soles of your feet placed firmly on the floor. In a gentle motion raise one knee towards your chest and lower it to the original position. Repeat this for 8 times and do it again with the other knee.

Hamstring Stretch

With this stretching exercise lie flat on your back on a level surface with your knees bent and the soles of your feet firmly on the floor. Lock your fingers together behind your thigh and pull on the back of the thigh and gradually straighten out the lower half of your leg. Hold this position for about 20 seconds and release and repeat the same movement with other leg. Ensure you stretch slowly until you feel that pulling sensation if you feel any pain be sure to stop.

It is advisable that if you are not use to stretching or if you have a back problem that you speak to physiotherapist first to advise you on the best course of action to take.

Host Kevin OConnor and landscape contractor Roger Cook visit a 70-year old tradition on Poydras Street, Mothers Restaurant, to sample some of the local cuisine. In Holy Cross, Roger meets landscape architect Brian Sublette to see how hes creating both public and private space on our sizable lot. Fencing specialist Mark Bushway is on hand to install the green privacy fence, arbor, and gates going up in the side yard, while Deryl Boudreau installs a standby generator on the other side of the house. Two blocks away, master carpenter Norm Abram meets executive director Beth Galante to see how her non-profit, Global Green, is building a sustainable and affordable housing development in the neighborhood with the participation of actor Brad Pitt. Back at our house, countertop contractor John Finney arrives with the countertops for the kitchen, while upstairs in the master bath, tile contractor Fred Foltmer shows Kevin the travertine floor and the glass tile going up in the shower area. Over at Musicians Village, under the watchful eye of pianist Ellis Marsalis, Kevin finds NBA Legends Willis Reed and Robert Parish lending a hand along with local hero Tyson Chandler from the New Orleans Hornets. All of the players have local ties and are committed to keeping the national spotlight focused on the ongoing housing crisis in New Orleans.
