There are lots of reasons why a junior or new enterprise architect should hire a mentor/coach. There are a number of skills that can only be really developed under the focused leadership of someone who has “been through the mill”.
For instance do you understand the decisions and constraints in the wider scheme of things when you analyze the whole of the solution? This skill includes the ability to look at problems in an abstract way. This is called systems thinking.
Few understand the organizational politics of the organization you are working in. Do you currently understand how those under-currents influence you and the outcomes you are trying to produce?
Can you clearly communicate without stepping on too many toes and still get your point across? You possibly need improvement in this area – most people do. Do you understand that people aspects and dynamics in human factors which influence the business? It’s called human relations and includes being pragmatic as well as understanding team plus personal dynamics.
Have you had any training in strategic thinking and understanding how decisions are made on the constraints and alignments that affect the overall business of the company? Not to mention leadership which basically means how to influence others to accomplish tasks and follow your guidance.
If you are lacking in these skill areas then a good enterprise architecture mentor/coach can help you develop the skill sets needed so that you can effectively use these “soft skills”. And don’t dismiss these soft skills as being secondary to your role as an IT architect. After all if you don’t understand the business, the people who work in it, and the people who they work for (that is the customers) then you really have no way of designing a useful and profit driven IT architecture.
One of the reasons why you should hire a coach is so that you can take training and skills development in the “soft skills” areas at the right time in your journey from beginner to accomplished IT architect. A good enterprise architecture mentor/coach understands the importance of these skills and will enable you to plan (and give feedback on) your skill development as your career progresses.
Soft skill development alone is probably one of the biggest reasons to hire a coach, because IT people are generally well known for their non-people skills. An effective enterprise architect is also a very strong influencer right from board level to the fellow who is cutting code.

Win7 64 bit shortfall – Glowplug – Long Beach, CA
I received this 1.5TB Lacie drive this week and installed it on my system which is a Win7 Pro 64 Bit with a ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard and i-Core 7/930 CPU. I chose the Firewire connection as it looked like it would be the fastest. Drive was found and proceded to do a Win7 backup. Twenty four hours later it still was not done. I than did some checking and found you needed to install a legacy Firewire driver. I did then than ran a simple drag and drop copy of a folder with 18GB. Sustained copy rate for the new Firewire connection was no more than 9 MB/sec. I switched over to a standard USB 2.0 port and the same drag and drop transfer rate went to 20-25 MB/sec. Another issue is that unless you buy the upgraded version of their Genie backup software, there is not backup SW included that is Win7, 64bit compliant. I get the impression that Lacie though well made might not be up to date on the technology side (more issues with type of eSATA connection it will accept too). For now it works fine but it was disappointing to uncover these issues.

No other single person transformed twentieth century Chicagoland hospital architecture more than did Frank Lloyd Wright, who was unquestionably the most famous architect in America. Born in Wisconsin, Wright had no formal training in architecture before he came to Chicago in 1887. He obtained employment in the office of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee as a draftsman, but it was Louis H. Sullivan who mentored him and taught him to view architecture as a creative balance between the function and environment of a structure rather than merely accepting traditional architectural conventions and precedents.
Frank Lloyd Wright opened his own architectural firm in 1893 in the Chicago south suburbs healthcare area of Oak Park. Many of his employees went on to major architectural careers, including Barry Byrne, William Drummond, Marion Mahoney, and Walter Burley Griffin. Wright’s early twentieth century residential plans, which came to be known as the Prairie Style, represented a new approach to architecture which resists categorization. At a time when the typical American home was designed with rectangles upon rectangles, Wright’s homes were human-scaled and flowing reflecting ideal conditions for living rather than rigid boxes within boxes. Prairie style architecture was conceived as modern architecture for a democratic American society. Distinguishing features of the Prairie style include horizontal proportions with flat stucco or brick walls, often outlined by strips of wood in contrasting colors; abstract, geometrically ornamental windows; and gable or hip roofs with widely overhanging eaves.
Because the Prairie style originated in Chicago, there are many examples in the Chicago metropolitan area, particularly in Beverly, Hyde Park, and Rogers Park. Some of Wright’s early Prairie style homes, including the Coonley House in Riverside Illinois and the Robie House, have become major monuments in architectural history. Wright also experimented with innovative affordable housing, such as American System-built Houses and the Waller Apartments. In total, Frank Lloyd Wright designed over three hundred buildings, with over a hundred in the Chicagoland healthcare area alone.
For example, the Charnley House located at 1365 North Astor St. was built in 1891 as a collaboration of two world-renowned architects, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. This structure, built for Chicago lumber dealer James Charley, exhibits the massive geometry and detailing of Louis Sullivan together with an early hint of Wright’s Prairie style design and planning. It is an urban townhouse which takes maximum advantage of a small city lot. Wright later called it the first modern house and it was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1972. The Roloson Houses at 3213-3219 South Calumet Ave. were built in 1894 and are the only row houses which Wright designed which were actually built. The facades show the steeply-pitched rectangular and triangular bands of windows which characterize English Tudor Revival architectural style.
These row houses were designed by Wright shortly after he left Louis Sullivan’s firm and thus show many Sullivan influences, such as the terra-cotta ornamentation, reminiscent of Louis Sullivan’s style which embellishes the spandrel between the top two floors. They were designated a Chicago landmark in 1979. The Walser House at 42 North Central Ave. was built in 1903, and it represents one of the best of Wright’s experiments with inexpensive residential design. Although located on a narrow city lot, this house possesses all of the characteristics of Wright’s mature Prairie style including horizontal emphasis which results from the deep roof eaves and the bands of windows, straightforward employment of simple materials, and a spacious but functional open interior plan. It was designated a Chicago landmark in 1984.
From its origins in Chicagoland healthcare, Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence and his Prairie style spread to a world-wide architectural movement. Chicagoland hospital is just one of over a hundred buildings in the Chicago area which attest to Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative genius.

Architecture is the art and profession of designing buildings. The word architecture also has a historical meaning. In that respect, it may refer either to the building style of a particular culture or to an artistic movement. For example, we speak of Greek architecture or Gothic architecture.
Architects design many kinds of structures. For instance, they design houses, schools, hotels, hospitals, stadiums, factories, office buildings, theaters and houses of worship. Architects also design monuments dedicated to the memory of important events and people. The beauty of a city or town is largely determined by the quality of architecture.
Although architecture has artistic qualities, it must also satisfy a number of important practical considerations. For example, an architect may design an office building that looks beautiful. But if people cannot work comfortably and efficiently in it, the building fails architecturally.
There are unique features about architecture that set it apart from other arts. In most cases, painters, writers, composers, and other artists create their works and then try to sell them. But a building may cost thousand or millions of dollars to construct. In nearly all instances architects must have a buyer for their work before they create it. For example, rarely can an architect design an office building, afford to have it constructed, and then try to find someone who will buy it.
Unlike some other artists, architects must work with other people to produce their designs. Novelists, for example, can create their stories alone from their own inspiration. Within the limits of those wishes and needs, architects can make their personal artistic contributions.
Architects work closely with the client throughout the development of a building design. They decide how best to fulfill the clients requirements and give advice on probable costs. They make drawings and models that show how the building will look after it is completed. They also work with the many different types of contractors who actually build the structure. Architects supervise the construction of the building and, in many cases, receive a percentage of the construction budget as their fee.
