Yes, they may be really annoying but almost certainly contrary to widely best-known belief, the reason is not always lack of sleep. So let’s consider the additional factors?

The skin about the eye sticks out as the thinnest most delicate portion of the face and in fact on the body for the reason that the oil glands in this area are in limited supply. The area around the eyes is the thinnest skin in the body often the signs of aging will first manifest here. This particular area is thinly dotted with oil glands that’s why it has a tendency to dry out. The instant this comes about, the undesirable veins come to be quite noticeable showing the eye a dark color.

  • Genetics:
Its all in the gene pool. Look at your parents, if they have it then there’s a good chance that you will have them as well. Thinness of the area around the eyes is a hereditary thing. And if you’re prone to skin allergies the skin around the eye area will become dark if you constantly rub the eyes.

  • Not Enough Sleep: Late night partying, lesser amounts of sleep, fatigue, stress, infected sinuses and pregnancy makes the skin pale. Veins are more prominent when skin is pale which make you have Lack of Sleep and Fatigue: Partying into the wee hours of the morning, fatigue, and sinus infection renders the skin pale. With pale skin, veins are more noticeable making the skin under the eyes dark..

  • Facial Bone Structure: Your facial bone structure can work not in your favor when you have deep set eyes as this casts shadows to the underside of your eyes giving the impression that you have circles under eyes.

  • Too Much Sun Exposure: If you are too exposed to the sunlight, the pigmentation of your skin increases causing the skin to tan. When this happens to the area under the eyes, the exposed skin darkens.

  • Medications: A lot of medicines cause the blood vessels to dilate. Dark circles under eyes will appear due to the thinness of the skin in this area.

  • Improper Nutrition: With poor nutrition, the skin will become pale due to the lack of essential nutrients absorbed by the body. Paleness of skin emphasizes the appearance of veins making the skin look dark.

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal imbalance which is normal and usually happens to women who are expecting babies, when their menstruation is approaching or occurring, and lastly menopause can cause the skin to look pale. Pale skin unfortunately emphasizes those thin veins under the eye’s skin making you look like you have raccoon eyes.

  • Age: Aging is inevitable and as we grow old the skin in the eye area become more dry and wrinkled due to loss of fat and collagen. When this happens the reddish-blue blood vessels under the eyes appear as dark circles.

  • Lifestyle: Smoking, drinking alcohol, too much caffeine all contribute to a darker coloration around the eye area.
