High Violet Newcomer to the National and loving the album! – cellsandmice –
Heard them on NPR’s All Songs Considered and they somewhat stuck out in my mind to a point that I vaguely recognized the name when I saw the album. Clicked through the samples and thought I liked it enough to buy. Great buy, interesting and easy to listen album. Relaxing yet not depressing. Great melodies and each song is equally strong, lovable and unique. Great album even for someone who’s clearly just been introduced to the band. If you like Noah and the Whale and the Postal Service you’ll like this.
: High Violet, the new full-length record by the National, is a nervy, melodic, explosive and beautiful set of songs that find the band at the height of their collaborative powers. The music is wide-ranging in its moods, by turns intimate and rough, expansive and spare, full of stark angles and atmosphere. Berninger’s singing wild, half-broken, sly evokes a feeling of being haunted, by love, by paranoia, by something just out of reach. High Violet may be The National’s most thematically twisted record to date but it somehow also manages to be their most infectious and immediate. High Violet
