M. Butterfly [VHS]

Jeremy Irons gives another superb and underrated performance in M Butterfly, an elegant adaptation of the Broadway hit by playwright David Henry Hwang. Irons plays a French diplomat in China in 1964 who falls in love with a star of the Beijing Opera, not realizing that the entrancing performer holds secrets that will ruin his life–that the singer is a spy for the Communist government is only the beginning of the diplomat’s troubles. Though M Butterfly may seem like a departure for director David Cronenberg (best known for horror and science fiction flicks like The Fly and Scanners), the themes of desire and self-deception fit comfortably into his oeuvre, alongside his adaptations of difficult novels like Naked Lunch and Crash. M Butterfly, like the more popular movie The Crying Game, is a cunning examination of love and denial. Also featuring John Lone (The Last Emperor). –Bret Fetzer

M. Butterfly – T. Marino –
If you’re looking for a Book turned into a movie–this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian “woman” (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and also and was definetly an attention keeper.

Come See the Paradise

Come See The Paradise is a deeply touching love story set against the backdrop of a dramatic and controversial period in American history, It follows the romance and eventual marriage of Jack McGurn (Dennis Quad), a hot blooded Irish American, and a beautiful Japanese American Lily Dawanura (Tamlyn Tomita), at the outset of World War II.

The clash of cultures, at once painful for the two lovers, becomes insurmountable after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. Lily and the Kawamuras are relocated To a bleak, outdoor internment camp in California, Jack is drafted into the Army, powerless to help the woman he loves abandoning all hope of ever winning her family’s approval.

Tomita saves a sinking ship… – Vahan – Vancouver, BC
The message of this film is very important, and historically accurate.
But so much didn’t work: Quaid’s unresolved past and military service (going AWOL often and without punishment). His relationship with his cussing brother, his NYC movie union debacle. And why was there no mention of the 1.6 billion dollars paid in repairations at the movie’s end?(Paid in 1998, this Film made in 1991).

Still, this movie tugs at the heart. Lost in all of this is the performance of one of the greatest unknown actresses our our time, Tamlyn Tomita. She is brilliant, and her talent is wasted opposite Quaid whose Irish accent appears and reappears. Sadly, guess who became famous?

Buddy/Soccer Dog/Sylvester

Filed under: Hoshi Shizuko — teraanymore @ 7:04 pm

Buddy/Soccer Dog/Sylvester Sony: Buddy
Rene Russo (Ransom, Get Shorty) stars as eccentric socialite Gertrude “Trudy” Lintz, who adopts a baby gorilla into her already-bustling animal menagerie. Along with chimpanzees Maggie and Joe, Buddy gets into all kinds of hilarious monkey business and proceeds to drive everyone bananas. A delightful family adventure based on a remarkable true story featuring amazing effects courtesy of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Soccer Dog
It’s only the second game of the season and the Stampede just lost a key player. Now only Lincoln’s excellent forwarding skills can save the team from a forfeit — and score a path to the championships. But will the PeeWee Soccer League let a dog play? And what about the cruel and determined dogcatcher on Lincoln’s tail? It’s all up to Lincoln to win a championship, rally a town, and unite a young family in this heartwarming comedy starring James Marshall, Olivia d’Abo and Jeremy Foley.

Sylvester
A young girl’s unwavering faith in a battered horse takes them both to the prestige and honor of national competition in this touching, heroic drama. Melissa Gilbert makes a spirited film debut as Charlie Railsberg, a 16-year-old wrangler who recognizes the noble spirit of a wild horse she christens “Sylvester.” Oscar(r) nominee Richard Farnsworth portrays John Foster, a hard-headed stockyard boss who takes Charlie and her two orphaned brothers into his home. Foster is convinced that Sylvester is worthless, but is proven wrong when Sylvester and Charlie become the odds-on favorite at the National Equestrian Trails. Before it’s all over, Charlie falls in love and is faced with the opportunity-and decision-of a lifetime.

Sylvester

Sylvester Not what I expected from Melissa Gilbert – K. Walton – SC
This is probably a good story, but we didn’t finish watching it because of all the cursing and foul language. It’s so sad that it seems this is expected in making movies, even those that have a good story.
GILBERT,MELISSA: Melissa Gilbert made her movie debut in this “National Velvet”-style story of a girl and her horse. With the help of Richard Farnsworth and Michael Schoeffling, Gilbert trains a wild horse, Sylvester, and goes on to win a show competition. Cinderella is a cowgirl in Sylvester, a hard-luck story with a happy ending if there ever was one. Melissa Gilbert is the tough-talking teenage orphan cowpoke whose natural talent and determination transform her into a prize-winning equestrian. Soapy subplots abound: She has a drunken reluctant mentor (Richard Farnsworth, in a fine turn), fights the court to raise her two younger brothers in a rundown trailer, and protests too much against a would-be sweetheart (Michael Schoeffling, the resident hunk of Sixteen Candles). Yet there is poetry in the scenes of Gilbert riding Sylvester through the hills and magical footage of Farnsworth secretly training the horse by moonlight. Even the trite dialogue (“Did you kill their dreams like you’re killing mine?”) fails to do in the modern fairy tale. It’s a pretty darn imperfect world Gilbert and friends inhabit, which in its own plodding way makes it seem like real life, despite the unlikely journey from jeans to jodhpurs. –Valerie J. Nelson

Starsky & Hutch – The Complete Third Season

Filed under: Hoshi Shizuko — teraanymore @ 5:05 am

Starsky & Hutch – The Complete Third Season … classic television at its finest … – Mark Talmadge – Flint Michigan
While I don’t go into boring details about this particular series, which you can find information about the show over at Wikipedia, I have to say that I’m disappointed at anyone who crashes any classic television series for one simple reason, these shows were produced back during the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. The problem is that most reviewers try to judge these classic shows as if they are being produced by today’s standards.

For quite a few of us who grew up watching the original broadcasts of such shows as Starsky and Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard, The A-Team, Magnum P.I, and so on, we fell in love with these shows because it was a form of escapism. These shows were produced at a time when America had problems with the Energy Crisis, the Iran-Contra Affair and even the employment problem back then.

Don’t judge these shows by the production values of television shows being currently produced. Enjoy them for what they are, classic film noir. Starsky and Hutch continues to be a classic and very lovable television but not because of the writing or the acting. Simply because the characters represent a certain period of American culture where escapism and entertainment thrilled teenagers and young adults at a time when such escapism was desperately needed.
SONY PICTURES HOME ENT: Starsky & Hutch, starring Pail Michael Glaser and David Soul, is the epitome of the hip, 70s buddy cop show. Season Three reacted to criticism about the hit series boundary-pushing violence by pumping up the serious drama. The 1977-1978 season tackled socially relevant themes like child abuse, homosexuality and mental illness mixing “issues” with tire-squealing car chases, gunplay and colorful recurring characters like jive-talking Huggy Bear (Antonio Fargas) and quick-tempered Captain Dobey (Bernie Hamilton). A dazzling array of guest stars including Danny DeVito, Melanie Griffith, Suzanne Somers, Joan Collins and Philip Michael Thomas (TV’s “Miami Vice”) shared screen time with the two handsome cops, who directed some Season Three episodes. The show’s outrageous style and tongue-in-cheek humor, now played alongside more serious story lines, made STARSKY & HUTCH one of the most popular and innovative cop shows ever.

M. Butterfly

Filed under: Hoshi Shizuko — teraanymore @ 8:51 pm

M. Butterfly Warner Brothers: Screen adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway play. A French civil service officer risks and then abandons everything in his life in his obsessive pursuit of an enigmatic Chinese opera diva who harbors a secret. Playwright David Henry Hwang crafted his smash-hit stage play about love and illusion by mixing elements of a true story with echoes of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. When M. Butterfly came to the screen, certain aspects of its dramatic effect would have to be re-thought, a task given to David Cronenberg, still best known in 1993 as a director of brainy sci-fi and horror. Although the resulting film was widely considered a failure at the time, hindsight shows it to be a cool, controlled look at how various kinds of fictions infiltrate peoples’ lives. The story takes off with a French diplomat, newly assigned to China in 1964, who falls hard for a performer in the Peking Opera; Cold War espionage enters the scene as well. Most viewers will not be surprised at the biggest twist in the tale, but that doesn’t seem to have been Cronenberg’s main interest in pursuing this story, and indeed the downplaying of the gimmicky possibilities actually increases the theme of a person (or a nation, given the political backdrop) willing himself to believe in things that are visibly not true. Hwang’s script hits a little heavily on the critique of the Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing fantasy of the white man seducing the Asian woman, but the subtext of Sixties-era China and Vietnam certainly adds intrigue. Jeremy Irons is fine as the diplomat, a difficult and obtuse character, and John Lone is clipped and brittle in an equally complex role. A warm film it’s not, and its themes are a little to skeletal to come to life. But better than its reputation? Absolutely. –Robert Horton

I had seen this movie many years ago and when I tried to find it, it wasn’t readily available.
It is a very good (true story) movie.
Well acted and produced.
