Active Space Demo 2006 – Warburton & Damsen test: sample music/image algorithm

John Crawford of University California Davis held a workshop at UCSC in the use of his “Active Space” system in 2005. This clip shows how Active Space creates music and visuals through algorithmic processing of the captured motion of the actor. As the actor moves a hand across the camera’s eye, the camera and computer re-synthesize that data to produce live music and processed images. The sound and visuals are created by the action of the actor, not by a musician or music located off site. Active Space is an interactive media system incorporating video-based motion tracking, motion capture, real-time video and audio synthesis, high bandwidth networking, and multi-channel visuals and sound. It is used to create interdisciplinary dance and theatre performances and media installations. The system continually senses, measures and responds to the movement of participants, providing an array of tools with which to engage and “play the space” as an instrument. www.embodied.net Algorithmic, motion detect interaction technology based on this workship was subsequently implemented into the live performance “The Nightingale” at UCSC by Jess Damsen, Bob Giges and Timothy Jordan. currents.ucsc.edu

Comparative Developmental Physiology: Contributions, Tools, and Trends

Comparative Developmental Physiology: Contributions, Tools, and Trends: : Comparative developmental physiology is a growing discipline examining a diversity of organisms as they transform from single cells to mature, reproductive individuals. This collection of original, innovative essays emerged from a Roundtable on Comparative Developmental Physiology held in Glen Rose, Texas in the summer of 2002. This meeting brought together investigators studying the physiology of developing animals in an effort to identify the field’s potential contributions to biology. The participants honed in on common emerging themes and future goals, which are reflected in the chapters within. The nascent community of comparative developmental physiologists was challenged to amplify the power of data collection and tool development by focusing on a few select model organisms, while still employing the power of the broader, more traditional comparative approach.

Evolution has provided comparative developmental physiologists with remarkable biological diversity, which they have used to investigate a broad range of questions critical for understanding how life works. This goes beyond the basic nuts and bolts of cellular mechanisms to the functional whole, from the mechanistic level to behavior within and between organisms. The union of developmental biology with the breadth of comparative physiology holds much promise for a deeper understanding of evolutionary processes. – read more.
