Almost Starring Skinnybones These books are wonderful. I am tutoring a sixth grader who is not motivated to read. I was desperate for a really good book to hook him. I remembered Barbara Park’s books for younger kids and hoped that she had written something for older kids. She did!! These books are so funny and so appropriate for preteens. The main character Alex, has all of the thoughts and insecurities of a real boy, and he gets himself into these amusing situations. My student and I take turns reading passages from the book. We both sit there laughing at his attempts to disentangle himself from the messes he creates. The language in the book is realistic. The kids are real. I was saved.
