Retirement in Puerto Vallarta–Interested in Deep Sea Fishing at its Best?

Picture this; it’s a 75*F day in November, the sky is blue, and you’re with your best fishing buddy, 20 miles out in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in the center of the Mexican Riviera. As you peer across the water, you see thousands of birds feeding on millions of small bait fish as they are driven to the water’s surface by larger fish from below. With acres of bait fish breaking the surface, the entire area, as far as you can see, has an oily sheen and the smell of a fish factory. As thousands of dolphins are playfully flipping and twisting while feeding in this orgy and larger game fish are joining the birds in this feeding frenzy; it’s time to strap yourself in and get ready for action!

As ten year residents of Vallarta, we’ve often had the privilege and good fortune to have been there and done it. If you’re a fisherman, life just doesn’t get any better.

Before we go fishing, let’s first check out the marina. In the well protected Puerto Vallarta marina, you will see in excess of 400 beautiful boats including multi-million dollar mega-yachts from throughout the world, million dollar fishing boats, and many sail boats from around the world. Circling 80% of the marina’s perimeter, you’ll find over 100 fine boutiques and five star restaurants. Behind and above these establishments are condominiums, all having magnificent views of the marina with its colorful array of boats. What a glorious site!

Due to the popularity and explosive growth of Vallarta, this marina has been unable to meet the demand of the boat owners traveling to or retiring in Puerto Vallarta. Therefore, 25 years ago, Nuevo Vallarta, five miles north, was developed around a recently upgraded 230 slip marina for moorage of yachts up to 130′ long.

During the past decade, the popular Nuevo Vallarta marina has also become so busy that another marina in the La Cruz de Huanacaxtle area, seven miles further north along the Banderas Bay shoreline, had to be designed and is currently under construction. The La Cruz Marina project is expected to cost in excess of 50 million dollars and will have slips for an additional 400 yachts. This marina will also be home to a bayside promenade, restaurants, shops, condominiums, and even an outdoor theater. Of course, like the other marinas, it too will be lined with luxurious condominiums.

Realizing that in a few short years, the above marinas will be filled, the Mexican government (fonatur) has defined the ten year plan for the Nayarit Riviera, about 25 miles north of PV and just outside of the Banderas Bay. This plan incorporates a 30 mile stretch of pristine shoreline on the Pacific Ocean and includes another world class 150 slip marina for yachts and sailboats, as well as three new golf courses, shopping districts, hotels and condo complexes, restaurants and boutique shops, and even a theme park modeled after Xcaret in the Cancun area. The infrastructure and the first Greg Norman golf course are currently under construction, therefore we can estimate that the marina will be ready within five years.

If you’re fortunate, you’ll be able to rent or purchase a slip for your million dollar yacht in one of the marinas mentioned above, housing over 1,200 million dollar plus yachts. As they say in Vallarta, if you’re really fortunate, it’s your best buddy that owns the million dollar yacht or fishing boat! Of course, if your boat is like most of ours, there are thousands of small slips available in the Vallarta area and many dry storage areas.

Okay, back to the fishing, now that we have a place to dock the boat! Although the large blue and black marlin run in the summer months, so do the gringos; they usually run to the north or to Europe because summer humidity and temperatures in Vallarta are similar to those in Houston.

Most of the serious fishing starts in November when the annual Sailfish Tournament is held. Fishing continues throughout the seven month “high season”, during which time the average daily temperature is 73*F with virtually no chance of rain. We have fished every year for the past decade and can tell you that fishing success varies significantly from year to year, depending on ocean water temperatures and currents. Four years ago, it was not uncommon to land ten to fifteen 100 pound sails a day. During one outing, we had three on simultaneously, all “walking across the top of the water”, heading in every direction imaginable–what a catastrophe that was! Most often during the “high season”, catching one to three sails per trip would be considered typical.

On the other hand, marlin are much more unpredictable during the “high season”. They’re out there but are few and far between. When you do hook-up, it’ll be anywhere from 600-1,000 pounds and will test your stamina.

Talking about testing your stamina, try landing a 300 to 400 pound yellow fin tuna! When the tuna are running, and they do every year during the winter months in the Pacific Ocean just outside of Banderas Bay, you’ll be able to test your fishing prowess as well as your physical condition! The smaller ones, in the 30 to 70 pound range are fun to catch and will provide you plenty of entertainment. When they range from 100 to 200 pounds, they head south as soon as hooked and the fight begins. Be prepared for a one hour struggle getting them to the boat, after which you’ll be needing a cold cerveza and an hour of rest! There will be a period of time almost every year when the big fellows show up. They are in the 300 to 400 pound range, approaching world record sizes. These monsters head out and deep as soon as hooked and hopefully, as your reel is spinning and your line is evaporating in front of your eyes, you’ll have time to get harnessed into your chair. You are getting ready for the three hour fight of your life when you’ve hooked a 400 pound yellow finned tuna. If you are a normal retiree, you’ll never get it in alone without having a cardiac arrest! We’ll usually have to rotate positions every half hour or so in order to land one of these monsters. Landing a 700 pound black marlin is a job, but landing a 350 to 400 pound tuna is life threatening!

Probably the most popular fish in the Vallarta area is the dorado. They are very edible and beautiful game fish ranging from 20 to 80 pounds. Dorado are plentiful, fun to catch, and considered by many to be the best eating fish in the sea.

There are numerous other game fish in and around Banderas Bay as well as great bottom fish such as huge red snapper.

If you’re not fortunate enough to own a million dollar fishing boat, there are many charter boats that cost from $300 to $500 per day. There are also hundreds of pangas that can be chartered for bay fishing at about $30 per hour. Banderas Bay is approximately 25 miles in diameter and one of the deepest bays in the world. Therefore, catching a 100 pound sail fish or a 50 pound dorado 300 yards offshore while fishing in a panga is not uncommon. Seldom will you ever get skunked when fishing in the beautiful Vallarta waters. Also, since almost every fish that you catch is desirable for eating, most of the restaurants in Vallarta will be pleased to prepare a wonderful dinner for your entire family using your “catch of the day” as the main course.

During the “high season”, weather conditions are always perfect for fishing. Winter storms are virtually nonexistent and the ocean water is generally quite calm. Perhaps once a month, the ocean might be choppy enough to prevent you from safely leaving the 25 mile bay, however the chance of catching a thriller 20 miles out, but still in the deep bay water, always exists.

As a secondary benefit to all fishermen, the scenery from offshore with the Sierra Madres as a backdrop, has to be among the finest on the planet; always take a camera when fishing in this area. The Mexican shoreline along this Riviera is as beautiful as Pebble Beach and it seems to run forever. If you have the opportunity to take an overnight fishing trip, in all probability you’ll anchor in one of the many inlets or coves along the Riviera. As you gaze into the evening sky, you’ll see more stars than you ever dreamt existed; it’s absolutely incredible. With a perfect climate, a magnificent shoreline, and an abundance of world class game fish, Puerto Vallarta offers what many consider to be the best deep sea fishing in the world.

Maltese Cuisine

Maltese cuisine is quite humble in nature and is known as ‘the cuisine of the poor man’. It is typically Mediterranean with influences from previous rulers namely Arabs, Italians, French, Spanish and the British.

Malta has a rich culinary tradition and is technically the first ever fusion cuisine in the world. During the reign of the Knights of St. John in Malta, each of the Langues brought with them their own ingredients and recipes. The native Maltese worked in their kitchens and that knowledge was then brought home and the food was integrated in the local cuisine.

Some typical Maltese dishes include:

Rabbit – Rabbits are reared and farmed in Malta and are very tasty. There are some restaurants that specialise on just rabbit.

Widow Soup – This is a vegetable soup made with whatever vegetables are in season, cooked in a thick tomato stock. Some people add little pasta to it but this is not necessary.

Arjoli – This is a julienne of vegetables, spiced up and oiled.

Maltese sausage – The Maltese sausage is a confection of spicy minced pork, coriander seeds and parsley, wrapped in stomach lining.

Snails – Cooked with garlic and served with a green sauce made with garlic and fresh herbs and accompanied with fresh crusty Maltese bread.

Lampuki Pie – Filleted dorado mixed with spinach, chestnuts and sultanas and encased in a short-crust pastry.

Pastizzi – Hot pastries filled with either ricotta cheese or peas. The pastry is formed of multiple sheets of transparently thin and crunchy layers.

Stuffed Aubergines – Oven baked aubergines filled with minced meats, breadcrumbs, onions, garlic and parsley.

Bigilla – This is a puree made from beans and herbs.

Timpana – Baked macaroni in a meat tomato sauce wrapped in pastry.

Ross fil-forn – Delicious baked rice with a meat tomato sauce.

Bragoli – Thin layers of beef form a parcel filled with a hard-boiled egg, pork mince, parsley and breadcrumbs which is then simmered very gently in gravy.

Hobz biz-zejt – A Maltese bread or ftira, rubbed with tomato and olive oil then filled with garlic, onions, tuna and gerkins.

Qaghaq ta’ l-ghasel – It is a pastry stuffed with a honey mixture.

Mqaret – A date-filled deep fried pastry.

10 Best Mexico Vacations

Image : http://www.flickr.com

1) Mexico Beach Vacation – no where in the world are the beaches better than they are in Mexico. The best known beach destinations – Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Mazatlan – conjure up visions of sun-drenched strips of sand sparkling under a blue Mexico sky dappled with white, fluffy clouds and happy people frolicking in the surf. Come to Mexico for a beach vacation, and that happy person in the surf could be you.

2) Colonial Cities Vacation – the Spanish came to Mexico in the early 16th century and ruled for the next 300 years. The Colonial cities they built exhibit wonderful examples of baroque architecture, mission churches and porfirian mansions. Visiting these historic communities – Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Queretaro are just a few – gives modern tourists a glimpse into a majestic era now long gone.

3) Copper Canyon Vacation – the State of Chihuahua is home to a region known as the Sierra Tarahunara, and here the Copper Canyon, 1,000 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon, makes for a must-see Mexico vacation. A train carries passengers from sea level to 7,200 feet and then on into the capital city, passing through 86 tunnels and traversing 39 bridges, some of which are a mile above the Canyon floor.

4) All-Inclusive Resort Vacation – it is very possible to come to Mexico, book into an all-inclusive resort, never leave the property and have a wonderful time. For one price, guests enjoy usually elegant accommodations, delicious meals, personal service and a plethora of activities, everything from tennis to kids’ parties.

5) SCUBA Diving Vacation – Mexico is home to some outstanding diving destinations, two of which are Cozumel and Cabo San Lucas. Cozumel offers water visibility up to 200 feet, more than 200 species of tropical fish and water temperatures up to 80 degrees while Cabo has water visibility up to 120 feet and mysterious shipwrecks and delightful underwater canyons to explore. Diving in either locale is a real treat.

6) Archeological Ruins Vacation – with its rich cultural heritage, Mexico is a top destination for the exploration of archeological ruins. Once home to thriving Maya and Aztec civilizations (and others), today remnants of these ancient cultures are scattered throughout the country. Some ruins are well-tended and on the well-worn tourist map; others are in states of disrepair and buried deep within the jungle. Exploring them makes for an adventurous vacation.

7) Sportfishing Vacation – fishermen and fisherwomen come from all over the world to partake in Mexico’s world class fishing waters. Top destinations include Cabo (sailfish and marlin) and Mazatlan (dorado and tuna), and fishing charter boats are available for part-day or all-day trips.

8) Mexico City Vacation – as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere, Mexico City has much to offer. This grand, diverse and cosmopolitan metropolis sits atop the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan and is home to 130 museums, 64 theaters, 5 stadiums, 11 ecological parks and 7 archeological sites, not to mention hotels of all sorts and sizes, every shopping opportunity imaginable and an expansive assortment of restaurants.

9) Spa Vacation – nothing relaxes like a spa, and Mexico has its fair share of these delightful, soothing oasises designed to rejuvenate even the most stressed-out traveler. Spas can be found in hotels or as luxurious destinations in and of their own, offering everything from simple massages to seaweed wraps, manicures and yoga.

10) Whale Watching Vacation – one of nature’s truly extraordinary events takes place off the Pacific coast of Mexico each January through March when 11,000 of the world’s approximately 21,000 gray whales migrate from the Arctic to just north of Cabo to bear their young. This inspiring and touching spectacle makes for a great Mexico vacation.

Learning From the Masters – Wine Clubs and California Wines

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If your wine club wants a break from Cabernet and Chardonnay, come to the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, one of the oldest grape growing areas in California, developed during the Gold Rush of 1849. Instead of maritime breezes that cool the coastal vineyards, cold air floats down mountain ravines at night and sweeps over Foothill vineyards.

Nevertheless, Foothill appellations are warm weather areas and provide environments for the sunniest European grapes from mountainous Italy, arid Spain and Portugal, and the steep slopes and wide valleys along the Rhone River of Southern France. Most Foothill wineries, over one hundred now, are located in Amador and El Dorado counties.

If you’ve never tasted wines from these areas, you have good reason. Most wineries are small, and, instead of selling commercially or to a wine club, much of the wine produced there is sold locally to customers who visit from the greater Sacramento area. Vino Noceto is located in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley, a little winery with a big reputation for Sangiovese, or the “blood of Jove,” as the Romans called this noble grape.

Owners Jim and Suzy Gullet both had careers as computer systems analysts and purchased their first 21 acres in 1984 and then 18.5 acres a few years later. But they didn’t reside on the property until 1995, moving themselves and their three children from the San Francisco Bay Area. Suzy subsequently retired from banking, but Jim continued his career until just three years ago.

Both now work full-time at the winery and produce about 10,000 cases of mostly Sangiovese wines, 80 percent of which they sell directly to visitors at the winery tasting room and to those who receive wines from the Noceto wine club. Well-known wine writer, Dan Berger, says that Vino Noceto is “the only California producer that consistently captures the true Sangiovese fruit character” and names Noceto Sangiovese “the best California Sangiovese.” I repeat my conversation with Jim Gullet with minor editing for clarity.

Why Did You Choose To Plant Sangiovese?

We’ve always had more freedom to do different things in the Foothills, partly because there isn’t a clear road to success. While you can no longer just show up with a couple of extra bucks and start a winery in the Foothills to market to a wine club, it is none the less a lot less expensive and painful than Napa and Sonoma. But having said that, in the end Mother Nature and soil conditions determine what you can do well in the area.

This is a warm area; most of the Foothills are although as you go north or to higher elevations, you can move to more cool weather grapes. When we bought the property, we knew that it was a warmer region. We talked to a number of people, including Darrel Corti (influential Sacramento wine shop owner and Italian wine consultant and wine club enthusiast), who set up a trip to Italy in the fall of 1985. We went with our two and four year-old boys and spent two and a half weeks there, visiting a number of Chianti and Brunello producers as well as other vintners, Mastroberardino further south and some folks elsewhere that Darrel suggested.

We’d been working with Italian wines, particularly Sangiovese during the prior year once we purchased the property. And from our trip to Italy, we came up with how we thought it worked and how we should grow it here and make the wine. At that time, Italian wines were starting to come into prominence here, and we thought we could make interesting wine with the grape. Things go in spells. If we’d started 10 years ago instead of 20, I’d probably have looked at Spanish or Portuguese varieties, which now have some level of prominence.

What Did You Learn From The Italians?

We visited Isole e Olena, Castello di Rampolo, even Antinori’s people, and a handful of other top notch Chianti and Brunello producers in Tuscany. We understood that to preserve the floral aspects of Sangiovese, a wine club favorite, we were better off using large-format cooperage than small. If you go to Italy and look under the covers, you’ll see that some wineries are still using large tanks.

We thought for the style that we were trying to make, using 500-liter puncheons, or 130 gallons, about 55 cases, instead of the typical 225-liter barrels. By not swapping them out after two or three vintages, we thought we’d get a wine that emphasized the fruit more and oak less, and the wine would be handled more gently than in smaller barrels. So, the vast majority of our Sangiovese is aged in large format puncheons. We have one or two specific lots out of 15 or 20 different clones, or spots, in the vineyard that do better in relatively new barrels. But by and large, our wines are aged in the larger format.

We think that makes a difference. We also do cool fermentation, and we use Di Franceschini punch-down tanks for fermentation, which do a gentler job of extraction. We do roughly a week’s fermentation rather than high extract. And we try to stay within 13.3 to 14.5% alcohol, because we’ve found that as the wine gets to 14.5% alcohol, it doesn’t last, and it’s out of balance. If the fruit is real ripe and it’s not a wonderful year, the wine loses its character and tastes like every other wine, a disappointment for wine lovers belonging to a wine club. In addition, it’s very important to preserve the acid for a food wine and Italian wines in general by not over-ripening the fruit.

You’ve struck a beautiful balance. I don’t think that your Sangiovese could be easily confused with a lean Chianti because it’s a riper, fruitier wine. But it’s not an overly big California wine either.

We certainly tried hard not to make Italy disappear from it. But we’ve got the sun, and unless you work hard at it and pick really early, you’re going to have the ripe fruit that’s very hard for the Italians to get consistently.

How Are Energy Prices Affecting Wineries?

We all have concerns about energy costs going up. By and large, grape growers haven’t increased wholesale, commercial, retail, or wine club prices over time. But the price of diesel to run tractors through the vineyards is significant. Glass has gotten a lot more expensive in the last three to five years and will continue to increase because of the energy to produce it. A box of empty bottles weighs about half of what full bottles weigh, and even if it’s American glass, it’s probably been transported some distance.

Most of the time, we use American or Canadian bottles, but they’re very expensive. If economic times are tough, and you want to sell your wine, it’s not a good idea to raise your wholesale, commercial, retail, or wine club prices 10 percent. The industry has gone through this before and will rally back. Grape prices haven’t gone up yet, but I think we’re going to see a shortage of grapes because demand will continue to increase. It appears to me that while traffic in this valley is less, not as lucrative, and people are certainly not spending quite as much money this year as they did a year ago, it’s still not bad.

And local businesses that are linked to tourism, like RV parks and Bed & Breakfasts, are seeing some people, who would have gone perhaps overseas or at least a lot longer distance for their vacations. Now they’re sticking a little closer. Time will tell, but we’ve seen tremendous growth over the last couple of years. This year is likely to be pretty flat, but we could certainly live with that.

Spectacular Costa Rica Fishing – Your Guide to Where and When to Go

If you cannot wait to get away from Old Man Winter, a Costa Rica fishing trip may be just what will recharge your batteries! There are several Costa Rica vacation packages available on-line for sportfishing. With dozens of fishing world fishing records to its credit, Costa Rica is said to have the best ocean fishing in the world.

Sure, you can dip a line in a a little frozen lake or stream by your house. Those little crappies and sunnies were fun when you were growing up. Long-johns, parkas, and electric socks and sitting for hours on end over cold ice, your butt numb from cold and sitting in a little ice shack all day.

You are a big kid now. Is it not time to have big kid fishing? Trade in shoveling snow ’til your back aches, a runny nose and depressing weather for shorts and a funny looking tropical shirt. Put away your Chapstick, get out your suntan lotion, head to tropical beaches where you can be fishing in crystal waters with not a care in the world.

Do not know where or when to take that Costa Rica fishing trip? No worries. Here is the straight skinny.

Start with the basics. Just a couple of hours south of Miami lies Costa Rica. With about 780 miles of coastline on two great oceans, it is a salt water fishing mecca. So many places to fish, where to begin?

Here is an idea. Follow Columbus. More than 500 years ago, that famous explorer landed on the Caribbean coast in a place so incredible he named it—-Costa Rica—the Rich Coast. It was filled with fish, thick with sea turtles. Since it was good enough for Columbus, it is good enough for you, intrepid fisherman.

On the Atlantic coast, you will find the world-famous Tortuguero National Park and Barra del Colorado fishing waters up to the Nicaragua border. The seas here can be very choppy but when the waters are flat, this is fishing paradise! From May to November, the silver fighting tarpon is bountiful here, and they can attain weights of to 150 pounds. If you are very lucky, you might land a rare Atlantic sail. This is also a great place for large snook. Jack Crevalle, guapote, giant grouper, and tripletail can also be caught here. And, be sure to visit the world famous green sea turtle nesting beaches at Tortuguero.

To get to either Barra del Colorado or Tortuguero National Park, you will have to go by boat because there are no roads. This is wilderness country. Typically, people travel to Limon, a small Carribean community, charter airplane, car, or express bus, then head north on watercraft.

But—and this is a secret—some of the absolutely best tarpon fishing anywhere in the world now has a road right to it! Literally just a few kilometers from where Columbus made landfall is a place that some fishermen call the “mother lode” of tarpon and snook fishing. Check out Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve along the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, nearly at the Panama border.

Deserted beaches for miles, crystal clear waters, and when the tarpon are in, fabulous fishing. Fishing is good year-round here but the best months for tarpon typically are March, April, May and September through October. And, If you come between March and July, you wil also be able to see the sea turtles nesting.

Another great place for a Costa Rica fishing vacation is its North Pacific coast. This area is known as the “Gold Coast” because of its amenities and is conveniently reached. Simply fly into nearby Liberia International Airport where you will be just a short drive away from your waiting boat. You will find the fishing centers of Tamarindo and Flamingo with miles of great beaches and lots of Costa Rica attractions. If you are in search of sailfish, visit this coast between May and August for the best fishing, though these fish are here year-round, too. From August to October, you might find large schools of different tuna species with some weighing up to 400 pounds and many exceeding 60 pounds. Catch the shoreline-dwelling roosterfish here November to March not far from the Papagayo Resort. You also have a good chance of battling large marlin, wahoo, and brightly colored dorado fish.

Many visitors fishing in Costa Rica are looking for billfish and these beauties are very common along the Central Pacific coast. Drive to world famous Los Suenos Marina or the little town of Quepos and charter into the offshore waters to catch marlin and sailfish. December through April is the best time to catch these fighters. The vibrant dorado fish is often found here May to October while trolling. Closer to shore, folks commonly catch snapper, snook, roosterfish, and wahoo. Tuna are offshore.

Finally, for many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found on the southern Pacific coast down to Panama, off Puerto Jiminez, Golfo Dulce, and Drake Bay. When the water is warm, sails and marlin are abundant. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is reported by charter operators to offer the finest inshore fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. There are lots of kinds of fish here, including large groupers, delectable sea bass, and the toothy barracuda. Sometimes, you will have hundreds of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.

Of course, you can only catch the Big One if you are fishing for the Big One. So, turn off your computer, bid your comrades a fond adieu, and take that long needed Costa Rica vacation.

Eco Friendly Home Renovation

Have you ever seen a home that is not only hideous, but is completely out of place in its environment? Maybe all the trees have been removed, the lovely little stream has been dammed and filled in, or the construction of the home is obviously inundated with synthetic materials. Of course, people have the absolute right to live in a home that pleases them. But today, an increasing number of home owners are renovating their homes in an environmentally friendly way.

The number of companies that specialize in selling renovation materials that are good for the environment is increasing. The best place to look for a company that focuses their production on green materials is either online or by asking at your local construction supply store’s information desk. A green company tends to sell products that are not treated with chemicals as well as being environmentally-minded when harvesting or producing these goods. Paint has long been an item of environmental controversy, and now it can be found with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the mixture. Another example is that some companies now make insulation made from recycled goods like cotton or cork or even bamboo. There are hundreds if not thousands of other great environmentally friendly materials that are sure to suit your needs, whatever they are.

Wood is an important material whether you are building new or renovating your home. Green companies make sure to not disturb the environment, particularly fragile communities, when harvesting trees for lumber production. Generally any wood that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Counsel should be safe to use. Other companies are using recycled goods, like plastics and some types of woods, to create household construction items. It is even possible to have kitchen counters that are made with recycled paper, imagine that! Not only do green materials help the environment in one way or another, they are often very durable and demand less maintenance compared to traditional construction materials.

When choosing your renovation materials, you’ll discover an over-abundance of traditional materials. You’ll have to look a little harder to find “green” materials. Since the market for natural materials is considerably less than for traditional materials, you’ll see less big-money advertising for “green” materials. You might have to do some extra internet searches, make some phone calls to merchants, and search out appropriate building supply companies to find what you’re looking for. Persistence will win out, and you’ll delight in ecologically safe and hypoallergenic “green” materials for all your renovation needs.

Other than using green materials there are a number of ways to make your home more environmentally sound. Skylights are a great way to use natural sunlight to brighten up a room, versus traditional lighting that sucks energy. Solar energy is another smart way to fit into the environment a bit more. For years homeowners have used solar to heat their outdoor pools, but what about inside energy? Some companies have come up with a way to integrate solar panels into the roof so that they look just like normal roofing tiles. Imagine the long term payoff of solar panels versus reduced monthly electric bills.

Using natural insulation, replacing existing windows with energy-efficient wood or dual-paned glass and using flooring options from recycled glass will go a long way in making your home environmentally friendly. Recycling materials and being able to reuse them for building materials is changing the way some of us are renovating our homes.

Being environmentally conscious and choosing “greener” alternatives for home renovation projects remain an option, but more consumers are turning towards techniques, products and supplies that could turn their homes into a showcase for environmentally-wise buildings and materials.

Used Leather Luggage

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is common practice amongst the majority of consumer s to buy new things rather than buying something that has already been used. There are many reasons that make people buy only new. It may be because they just do not think about any other alternative. Some people may think that it is just not hygienic or clean to get someone else’s used goods for themselves. In other cases the option of getting used items may mean that the quality has dropped because it might be worn or torn or both. Yet another reason would be that when new products come out, there is no second hand product available to you.

When it comes to leather luggage that has been used I can say that things are a bit different. For those people that do not like to use things that other people have already used, you are missing out when it comes to leather. When leather is worn in it becomes supple and nicer to the touch. When it is brand new it has no character and is hard and you always need to worry about keeping it extra clean all of the time. So in the case of luggage you end up with a better deal if someone has already turned it into something better.

For those that think quality is lost after it has been used, it has to be noted that this is not the case when it comes to leather. Leather is such a strong material and when it comes to making luggage out of it you just know that it is going to last for years. Some of you may have some older relatives that have had theirs for many decades already and it will probably last long after they are gone. It might even be that you will end up using it for your travels and interesting journeys.

When it comes to used leather and used luggage, the combination is just great. Some will say that you are getting a better product than if it were new. Another benefit to this is that you are not paying as much as you usually would. You will be getting a great bargain and you might even be getting it for free. No need to worry about if it will last because you know how long it has lasted already. Try and make used leather luggage an option for yourself.
