Channel Vision IR Distribution System IR-5000 – MM – Central Massachusetts
I hid my components in another room and needed a solution for controlling them. A friend suggested this product as he was using the same thing to control components in his basement. He spoke very highly of the product. In my installation I converted the wallplate where my cable jack was to a blank plate with a hole in which I installed the “hole-mount” for the IR receiver which is included with this product. In this configuration, the range of use is extremely narrow. I had to point my remote almost directly at the receiver (and since it was at the same height as a wall outlet, it became annoying very quickly). I ended up purchasing the Harmony 900 remote (to replace my Harmony One and the IR-5000) which does RF to IR conversion. That ended up being the better solution for me.

The concept is great and worked part of the time for me. I did not try using the IR-5000 without the hole mount. Perhaps it works much better when surface mounted to the face of the TV (this is how my friend has his mounted), but it definitely does not perform to expectation when using the hole-mount.

I use this to control components that are in the basement and it works great. I did have to use cat 5e cable spliced into the supplied cable to get the length that I needed. I called them to find how to do this and they were very helpful. Very easy to splice the cable.

I have worked with other IR repeater systems, I am very happy with this installation in my home, however, I find the receiver to have a very small cone of reception or receiving angle(maybe as low as 20 degrees). Once I reoriented it towards our usual chairs, it works fine, even with the iPod Dock.
