Just a Brown Teddy Bear

Filed under: Carebears Cubs — pzoote @ 1:07 am

A huge dark shadow ambled along nearer and nearer towards us, emerging finally from the woods and stepping out on a great log that lay across the stream about fifty or sixty yards away. But soon he retraced his steps. He had caught our scent. Time passed, and no bears came. It was late in the afternoon when our guide decided that we could risk going up the stream before it grew too dark. The wind now blew from the side, and any animals that might be ahead would be liable to get the scent. Putting each foot down with care, the hunters worked their way up over the slippery rocks, through riffles where the salmon shot out from under their feet with nerve-racking suddenness. They had hardly gone a hundred yards when, from a thicket not twenty feet ahead, a low growl met them.

Our guide handed his haversack frame to me, and pointed his rifle. Another growl; and another. It was either a mother with cubs or a bear that had been wounded. Quietly we edged away to the other side of the stream, and along the edge of the opposite woods, our guide keeping his rifle aimed at the point of the thicket, ready for any sudden charge. Hardly fifty yards farther our guide stopped suddenly. All three hunters looked directly into the face of a brown teddy bear, not thirty feet away. There they stood, the bear peering from the woods in surprise at the three motionless humans in the stream, while the three equally surprised hunters stared at the bear.

Our guide was plainly worried-had the bear charged, he could not possibly have been stopped in that short distance. As for the camera hunters, they were too disappointed to be frightened-the animal was too much in the shade to photograph. Then as suddenly as he had appeared, the bear faded from view. He might have been the Cheshire Cat himself, so quietly did he vanish. Just then a salmon leaped from under my feet with a resounding splash, and I jumped as if I had been shot. Our guide spun around with his gun pointed, and the others were poised for flight. For a moment there was panic, then the ridiculousness of the situation struck the three; every bear on Admiralty must have heard their laughter.

Indeed, it might have been so, for no more animals were found along the stream that day. The bears had not yet come down from the mountains in full force. Signs showed that they had been feeding mostly on sedges and blueberries, but once the presence of light hairs revealed where a fawn had died.

The Mighty Grizzly Bear

Grizzly Bear Description

The Grizzly Bear seems to be among the most common that people recognize by its appearance. They are very large bears and they often have a coat that is chocolate brown in color. Some of them have a white tip to them though as they get older. They range in size from 5 to 8 feet tall with the males being larger than the females. They can weigh up to 800 pounds.

Distribution

Grizzly Bears are found in North America and they are often confused with Brown Bears that are also around that same area. They will be found around the rivers of Alaska when it is time for the salmon to run upstream for spawning during the summer months. They have a grand area that they move around in looking for food, with the radius of the male being much lager than for the females. You will also find them in areas of Canada.

These bears can cover many miles every single day. They can also run about 30 miles per hour should they need to. With that type of speed and power is it is very rare that their prey is able to get away from them.

Behavior

With the exception of caring for their young, Grizzly Bears are very solitary animals. They are excellent caregivers and they can become very aggressive when humans are around at the same time they have cubs. Females will also battle with male Grizzly Bears in order to protect their young.

Diet and Feeding

They are the top of the food chain when it comes to this area. They do not have to worry very much about becoming food for anything else. They also can take their pick when it comes to foods available. Some of their favorites include nuts, berries, leaves, and roots. They will also feed on a variety of different types of animals. Some of them are very small such a rodents. However, other times they will feed on a moose.

Grizzly Bears consume a high number of fish including salmon. They are very skilled hunters and it is exciting to watch them. They will observe the waters and quickly swipe with their claws when fish come by. Most of the time they will capture their prey, consume it, and continue hunting for more following this same method.

Reproduction

Grizzly Bears will mate from May until mid July. During this period of time the males will be calling out to the females. The females will leave a stronger scent for them to follow. Courting involves eating together and rubbing up on the sides of each other.

They will part soon after mating and the female will give birth to one or two cubs at a time. The gestation period ranges from 180 days to 265 days. The cubs are about one pound at birth and very vulnerable. The mothers are excellent at caring for them though. When they are two or three years of age they will venture out on their own.

Conservation

There are less than 1,000 Grizzly Bears remaining in the wild today. The illegal hunting of them and the destruction of their habitat continues to be a threat. Even with strong conservation efforts in place it is very hard to get their numbers to increase. The fact that so few remain has encouraged zoos to take them in and to help them reproduce in a safe setting. Plans for some of those young to be returned to the wild are in place.

Human interaction

Even though the Grizzly Bear is protected in the continental USA, many people still can kill them in Canada and Alaska. They are considered to be huge trophy hunts and with a limited number of them remaining, many want to get one before it is too late. The fact that Grizzly Bears unduly have a reputation of being man eaters means many people do not care of they are hunted or not.

Teddy Bear History

Filed under: Carebears Cubs — Tags: — pzoote @ 2:37 pm

To many of us, it is hard to remember our childhood without at least one cuddly teddy perched somewhere in our bedrooms. Most of us had one while growing up. Yet, what brought about the use of a teddy to bring comfort to a child and where did the teddy bear come from? It was in 1902 that the teddy bear was invented, simultaneously in Germany and in the USA. The story behind the development of the teddy in America was attributed to the US President Roosevelt.

The President was in Mississippi hunting, the hunt wasn’t going to well, until someone in the party captured and tethered a bear. The president was then invited to shoot the bear, however, the president declined adding “spare the bear, I will not shoot a tethered animal.” A cartoon depiction was then later published in the Washington Post. That same month Brooklyn shopkeepers Morris and Rose Michtom, decided that they would make a soft toy bear, to honour their President. The bear was called “Teddy Bear” and was displayed in their shop front. The bear became an immediate hit, with its sweet and cuddly design. The Michtoms went on to make their fortunes with the help of the teddy bear through the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company and the President had found himself an effective political mascot.

In Giengen, Germany, Margarete Steiff was the owner of a stuffed toy business. Her nephew Richard Steiff, who was a former art student, who enjoyed sketching bear cubs at the Stuttgart zoo, designed a bear which his aunt made as a prototype. The Steiffs introduced their first bear at a Toy Fair and an American buyer ordered 3,000, seizing upon the bear popularity that was gripping the United States.

Many teddy bear manufacturers began to appear during this boom period, with the American manufacturers facing stiff competition from German manufacturers, due to the fact that Germany had an established toy making industry. In England the J.K. Farnell & Co began to establish themselves and one of the most famous bears “Winnie The Pooh” was originally a Farnell bear.

Despite the First World War, the bear industry was still healthy, however, with the outbreak of World War II, factories were used to manufacture arms and not teddies. Between the 1950`s and 1970`s, the established teddy bear producers began to struggle with their high quality, hand finished teddies, when competing against cheap imports from the Far East. However, a saviour was to be found in the way of a British Actor, Peter Bull. Peter Bull appeared in films such as Dr Strangelove, Oliver Twist and Scrooge to name just a few, had an interest in teddy bears and openly admitted his love for them. This led him to write a book about his affection for teddy bears, which helped to initiate the resurgence of the teddy.

Today, antique bears, such as those manufactured by Steiff are highly desirable and can be sometimes be seen making an appearance in toy auctions. In 1994, Christies Auction House sold a Steiff teddy bear called “Teddy Girl” which sold for $176,000. It has been estimated that in 1999 in the United States alone $441 million was spent on the teddy by collectors.

Backpack Camping – Don’t Feed The Bears

Backpack camping in North America is one of the greatest adventures you can experience. The plethora of trail backpacking and backpack tours that you can take advantage of make it an ideal way to enjoy nature.

With awe-inspiring scenery and exciting trails, you can be sure that backpack camping will be something you will remember for a lifetime. Be careful, though. As enjoyable as it might be, look for the possible dangers that surround you during your backpack camping adventure.

The United States and Canada are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Many backpack tours are specifically geared towards giving tourists an up close view of these animals. Trail backpacking on your own will also bring you into contact with much of the wildlife as well – and some of these encounters are ones you may not want.

Bears are North America’s largest and most unpredictable predator. You can find bears in the northernmost tip of Canada and Alaska to as far as the deep South of the United States. While bear attacks are considered rare, they still happen and you have to be prepared should you find yourself in this situation.

There are three basic reasons that cause of bear attacks while trail backpacking or during backpacking tours: One – the bear is caught by surprise; two – you’ve run into a female bear with cubs; three – the bear smells food near you.

Backpacking through the woods and staying as quiet as you can sounds like a great idea. After all, you want to see the wildlife before it runs away, right? Howver, unless you’re hunting, moving through bear territory quietly while trail backpacking can be dangerous.

If you should suddenly appear in front of a bear at close range, the bear is going to be startled and angry. Make noise, talk, sing, or rattle cow bells as you hike to give the bear fair warning that you are in its territory. The bear will hear you and move off. The denser the area, the more noise you need to make. Bears have very poor eyesight, and they won’t see you coming through dense underbrush.

Bears can be a cute animal no matter what their size. Bear cubs appear adorable and cuddly and you might even have the urge to pet the beautiful adult bears. Unfortunately, bear cubs and bears are something you need to stay away from.

If you encounter them during your backpacking tour – stay away! Adult bears are highly protective of their cubs and they will charge you if you approach them. Be assured that the cubs are not lost. Their mama is always keeping watch over them.

A backpacking tour might take you a few days, so your trip will include camping overnight. Bears might not be able to see very well, but they have an amazing sense of smell and they will definitely sniff out any food that you have with you.

If you have food hidden anywhere in your gear or tent, they will find it. To help keep them away from your campsite, hang the food in a tree at least fifteen feet off the ground away from the campsite. Be sure to hang it in the middle of a branch where a climbing bear won’t be able to get to it.

Taking some extra precautions during your backpack camping excursion will only add to your excitement and good memories. Knowing the dangers that you could possibly encounter could be a life-saving technique. If you have any doubts about the safety of something in the wilderness, always err on the side of caution and stay away from it.

From Bear Cubs to Totem Poles, Chain Saw Art is Going Public

While a chain saw may not be first tool that comes to mind when we think of art, chain saw sculptures (both wood and ice) can be breathtaking. Growing in popularity since the 1950s, this art form has expanded far beyond adorable wooden bear cub sculptures and rustic carved signs. Now, artisans produce everything from life-sized dogs, moose, people, and turtles to 20-foot tall totem poles.

The International Appeal of Chain Saw Art

Beyond the United States, chain saw art can be found around the globe in Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, and Japan. In fact, the first chain saw carving World Championships appeared in 1987.

More recently, the Ridgway Rendezvous has been billed as the largest chain saw carving event in the world. In this Pennsylvanian town, more than 200 international carvers have participated in a week long celebration. Their carvings raised tens of thousands of dollars to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the premiere organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Using a Chain Saw with Artistry

Often, chain saws are used to begin the carving process because they can sculpt in a fraction of the time required to carve with mallets and gouges alone. Chain saw blades and chains are now available that have been specifically designed for carving. Chain saw sculptures may be completed with more conventional tools, such as chisels, knives and even other power tools.

The International organization of chain saw carvers offers online art galleries, forums, website listings, auctions, and information about exhibits to members.

What You Need to Know Before You Try This at Home

Becoming a skilled chain saw artisan requires instruction and practice, especially in how to safely operate the saw. It’s estimated that more than 40,000 people suffer chain saw injures every year.

Chain saws should have anti-kick back features that should not be removed. Plus, storing chain saws where children or even teenagers could access them is just as dangerous as storing guns and ammunition unsafely.

Always keep in mind that personal protection is also important for your eyes, hearing and skin.

Cal – University of California at Berkeley

If there is one university in the state of California that has maintained many school traditions for all these years, it is the University of California at Berkeley, also known as Berkeley, UC Berkeley California, or simply Cal. This university, which was established in 1868, was the first public university in the state to be called the University of California. Nowadays, however, University of California system is composed of many UC universities all across the state.

One of the traditions that stuck to Cal since its foundation is the school colors, which are gold and blue. The founders of Berkeley chose gold to represent the Golden State and blue, which came from Yale blue, because most of the founders of this university came from Yale. Ever since the athletic teams of the University of California at Berkeley started to join intercollegiate games in 1882, they already wore gold and blue. The school’s sports teams, alumni, and students are called the Golden Bears. It all started in 1895 when the track and field team impressed a lot of people by winning five of the eight competitions. As a result of the remarkable wins, Berkeley became known across the US as a formidable athletics team. In honor of the stunning performance of the track and field team that year, UC Berkeley professor Charles Mills Gayley created a song entitled “The Golden Bear.” Since then, the California sports teams have been called by that name. Berkeley’s mascots before 1941 were live bear cubs. However, for the safety of the spectators, the school decided to use costumed mascots instead. In 1941, Oski the Bear, the official mascot of Berkeley, was introduced. The name of the mascot came from the Oski-wow-wow yell. Nowadays, there is an Oski Committee whose sole purpose is to take care of the costume and also to keep secret the identity of the person wearing it.

In order to guard the Big C – which was often vandalized by students of Stanford College – and other traditions and school spirits of Cal, the UC Rally Committee was established in 1901. The members of this committee have always been present at main spirit and sports events, they are charged with maintaining and caring for the large California banner, the Big C, the California Victory Canon, Card Stunts, and the five Cal flags. Moreover, the Rally Committee is also responsible for keeping the Stanford Axe when ever it is in the possession of the University of California at Berkeley.

The California Victory Cannon and the Card Stunts are two of the original Cal school traditions. The victory cannon, first used in the Big Game in 1963, is fired off at the start of every football match, every time the Golden Bears scored, and also after a win. The first time that the cannon ran out of ammunition was on September 7, 1991 when the Golden Bears won a match against the Pacific. The Card Stunt, also known as the bleacher stunt, is something that Cal students invented. The card stunts, consist of a blue Big C and a Stanford Axe picture, were first conducted during a 1910 Big Game.

Cookies of the Soul – Pine Nut Rings and One Mean Mama Bear

Filed under: Carebears Cubs — Tags: — pzoote @ 8:00 pm

Patty was walking along the forest trail. It was a beautiful day with that piercing blue sky and those pine trees waving in the wind ever so slightly reminding her of how grateful she was to be alive on a day such as this. She was just about to wistfully bite into one of her pine nut cookies when a shot rang out and her wistful look became one of shock and her cookie became a waterfall of crumbs. “Jeez, Steve, do you think can stop shooting that thing for one minute. You never get anything anyways. Even the deer aren’t scared. I think I saw that one deliberately get in your path just to make fun of you.”

“Sorry honey, but you did know that we were coming out to shoot deer and I’ve been practicing after all the lessons your father gave me. By the way I think you were right about that deer though. I swear he stuck his tongue out at me.”

“Yeah, you’re right. You also know that I came out here just to please Dad. He misses me when he’s at work. I hate the sound of shooting guns. But honey, I don’t think Dad taught you to shoot like that.”

“Oh no? Why don’t you come over here and show me.” He was smiling at her.

“I’m not coming over there. I have my feminine sensibilities. My daddy told me about men like you.” She floated over to him and gave him a kiss. “Would you be really surprised if I picked up that gun and fired a better shot than you though?”

“Actually, no, I could see you with a gun. I think it fits….”

A shot rang out deeper in the forest, than a second, and then a third. Patty and Steve immediately started walking at a fast clip towards the sound of the gun. Dad was down there and Patty knew that he never shot two times, let alone three. Dad was full blooded Cherokee and his Dad had always taught him to take care of nature and all the things in it. Dad always got the deer on first shot or he’d track it down and put it out of its misery. Then the family was expected to eat it, because killing for the pure pleasure of killing was not allowed.

As Patty was walking down that forest trail at a fast clip, she heard a yelp and small feet running down the path. Suddenly a baby bear ran between her legs and another one geared off to the left. “Steve, did you see that? Dad? Dad?” “There he is Patty.” There he was sitting on a log with his rifle cocked straight ahead of him. His shoulder was bleeding pretty heavily but his focus was steady. Just then a huge bear just under six feet tall came out of the trees behind him.

“Dad, behind you!” Steve was already getting his rifle ready when Dad turned around and shot it right as it began to charge. They both ran over to him. “Dad, what happened? Are you okay? That’s a stupid question….I….come on Steve, help him up. Dad that bear looked pissed, what did you do to it?”

They began walking down the path. “I’m fine Patty. No, it’s okay Steven, it’s just a short way to home. That bear….I was hunting this deer and I accidentally got in the middle of her and her cubs. Before I knew it she sprang at me through the bushes I got her in the shoulder but not until she got a good swipe at my shoulder. Remember what I told you last week about bears Patty? Well, I knew she was coming back because once you are what she believes to be a danger to her cubs than she is coming back to get rid of you. I was looking for her when she came charging. What I do know is that her cubs were old enough to take care of themselves now. It’s a shame though.”

“How’s the shoulder Dad? Do you want to wait here while I get help?”

“It could be way worse Patty, let’s get home….as soon as possible, because I heard the shooting you were doing Steve and you need about twenty new lessons and another pair of eyeballs before I’ll even let you touch a gun.”

Likely Page Break

“Very funny Sir.” They all laughed and went along their way.

Camping Tents and Bears – How and Why to Keep Them Separated

I’ll never forget when my 75 year old grandmother was out on her ranch in western Colorado and ran into a family of bears. She was out on her ATV and stopped to enjoy the scenery when she noticed that there were several young cubs to her right. Being an experienced outdoors person she knew the mother couldn’t be far away. She was right she had gotten herself stuck between a mother and her cubs. This is probably one of the worse spots to be in. Fortunately, she was on her ATV and able to quickly get out of her sticky spot. When most people are out camping and come across a bear they may be on foot or stuck at their campsite. This is why it is good to take some simple proactive measures to minimize your chance of having a bear encounter.

The number one thing you can do while camping to minimize your chance of a bear encounter is to separate your food from your tent. Most experts assert that you should have your cooking area 100 yards from your sleeping area. If possible it is also good to cook close to rivers. This is because winds are often able to sweep through valleys and disperse the scent of any food you are cooking. For those who want to be even more cautious it is recommended that you keep the set of clothes you cook with separate from your other clothes. This way if the clothes smell of food they won’t be next to the campsite.

In terms of storing food the obvious suggestion is to keep the food out of the tent. Two other options are to hang up your food or place your food in a bear resistant container. Hanging food can be tricky. You may need to try several different techniques, but the important factor is to have the food at least 12 feet off the ground out of a bear’s reach.

By simply separating your food from where you sleep you will greatly reduce the chance of having an unexpected dinner guest.

Hunting Black Bears Over Bait

Filed under: Carebears Cubs — Tags: — pzoote @ 12:35 am

If you haven’t tried black bear hunting, these bulky black beasts will give you a thrill that’s tough to compare to a typical whitetail hunt. There is just something about hunting a carnivore that gets your blood pumping. The great thing about a black bear is they are spread all over the United States and Canada, are a reasonable priced hunt, and normally are not an extremely physical hunt.

In my experience, a great way to start hunting for black bears is by finding an outfitter that hunts for bears over bait. Although you don’t have the fulfillment of back breaking hikes and spotting and stalking the animal, hunting over bait presents challenges of it’s own.

Normally the baiting begins before the season opens with sweets such as donuts, marshmallows, or any other sweet smelling tasty foods, supplemented with more fulfilling items such as dog food or meat scraps. Many outfitters will find an available supply of reasonable priced or soon to be discarded food and begin putting it out for the bears before hunters arrive. The bears grow accustomed to the food supply and often return year after year to the same area, sniffing around for the smell of sweets and a free meal.

The hunting is usually done from an elevated stand shadowed by the darkness of timber with an effort to keep it on the downwind side. In my opinion, the wind isn’t a huge factor as long as the outfitter doesn’t go to great lengths to remain scent free when he is refreshing the bait. The more human scent he leaves when refreshing the bait, the better in my opinion. Once the bears grow used to the scent, they are not as spooked when they do catch the smell of a human near the bait. Granted this doesn’t work very well if you begin baiting several days before hunting, but if you give the bears some time, they will grow more accustomed to the human scent.

One of the biggest difficulties is sitting in a stand hour after hour and trying to remain quiet and with very little movement. Some people (often women more than men) have a knack for this skill, but personally this is a grueling workout for me. To complicate matters, many times the areas where black bears flourish are thick with mosquitoes during the late spring, as well. Even if you are covered from head to toe with mosquito proof netting, they find a spot to reach you ,or never let you rest with continual buzzing in your ear. For me, it’s nearly impossible to remain still with these pestering bugs swarming the entire time. Black bears are extremely weary of odd sounds or movement, so this is a necessity. Occasionally you will hear a bear coming to stand, but many times, sight will be your first contact with a bear. Keep still and quiet and you will have a good chance at killing a bear. One option to slow down the mosquito swarm is a Thermacell. They are quiet, relatively scent free and do a fairly good job of keeping the mosquitoes at bay.

The second challenge is keeping your calm. When a bear comes into the bait it is very tempting to rush the shot. Bears are extremely difficult to judge, but if you spend a little time, you can often tell whether it’s a male or female. Males are blockier with a square face and often a sagging belly. You don’t want to shoot a sow with cubs and boars are normally larger, so take the time to judge the bear. A great reference for judging bears is watching some bear hunting videos before you go. I recommend Cave Bears on the Pacific Rim by Jim Shockey. There are numerous black bears taken on this video of all shapes and sizes. Another very important factor is placing the shot in the right place. I’ve found it’s easy to shoot a bear too far back. Be patient and wait until the bear has his front leg angled forward toward the front of his body. Place the shot right as you would on a deer, just behind the shoulder. Don’t take the shot if he is in an odd position or his leg is vertical with the ground. You may miss his vitals and have an injured bear on your hands. They will head for deep dark cover and it’s no fun tracking an injured bear.

The main thing is to get out and have some fun. Black bears are exciting to hunt and hopefully you’ll have a beautiful bear rug when you return.
