American Casino History

Early casinos were originally known as saloons. The development of saloons was influenced by four cities; New Orleans, being the first step to Texas, the home of gamblers; St. Louis, the home of fur traders; Chicago, with its large brewing trade; and San Francisco, the entrance to the goldmines. It was in a saloon that you could find somebody to talk to, drink with, and often gamble with.

Initially saloons could be found anywhere, often dug into the side of a hill. They later developed and could be recognized immediately because they were the town’s most imposing structure. Likewise, the saloon’s bartender was easily distinguished because he would be the best-dressed man in the saloon. He could also be found armed with a pistol and most likely a knife because he was both judge and jury to any disputes that regularly broke out.

The main contender for the status of America’s first casino was known as Brown’s Saloon. It was established in 1822 and could be found bordering Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Typically, saloons followed miners; wherever miners settled, saloons were never far behind.

During the early 20th century gambling became outlawed and banned by state legislation and social reformers. However, in 1931 gambling was legalized throughout the state of Nevada, and Las Vegas spawned America’s first official casinos. Additionally, New Jersey’s Atlantic City joined them in 1978 to become America’s second largest gambling city.

Las Vegas was responsible for putting the glamor and entertainment into gambling, largely through celebrities like

Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Sinatra and his friends, including Sammy Davis Jnr., and Dean Martin, became known

as the ‘Rat Pack’. They achieved iconic status in the gambling circuit and everybody wanted to share in their oasis of

sophisticated glamor. The original film ‘Ocean’s 11′ was filmed in Las Vegas, and cemented the town’s kudos forever.

During the 1970s the casinos in Las Vegas became notorious for their association with the Mafia. These events were authentically summarized in the 1995 Martin Scorsese film ‘Casino’, which really says the first and last word about

the glitz and glamor of American casinos during that eventful decade.

Nowadays anyone can experience the sophistication and excitement of a casino in the online world of gambling. Online casino gambling is one of the 21st century’s biggest phenomenons. These days, American casinos are just as likely to be hosted in the real world with a web server, and existing in a virtual format on the Internet.

American Graffiti

American Graffiti American Grafitti – ein wunderschöner Film über 60iger – T.N.T. – Deutschland

Mal witzig, mal traurig, mal cool, mal total crazy.

American Graffiti

Are you an African American? Have you found that many of the hair growth products out there in the market don’t seem to work for you?

This is because, many of the hair loss product out there focus their products for caucasian males. yes, so if you’re a female or you belong to another race, most of the hair growth products out there will not be suitable for you.

So what are the tips for African American hair growth?

Here are some that will help you to have a head of beautiful hair.

Most of the time, the root problem of hair loss is mainly due to damage to your scalp. Either you have blown dry your hair too many times or you have subjected your hair to too many chemical processes.

Hence, the first step would be to repair your scalp.

It may seem really easy, but the best way to unclog your scalp is to make sure that you have a good natural shampoo. This is to make sure that there is no other chemicals that would further damage your scalp.

Then, run warm water through your hair scalp for a minute or two before shampooing. This opens up the pores in your scalp and allows you to clear the pores of grease and dirty.

Remember, when you shampoo your hair, make sure that you use your finger tips (not nails) to massage the scalp. This ensures that you clean your scalp completely.

Also, do not keep rubbing your shampoo the rest of your hair. That will result in the shampoo stripping certain nutrients of your hair, making it dry and brittle!

By taking notes of these details, your will have a head of beautiful hair real soon!

American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Sets – Should You Invest in Proof Sets?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you wondering whether you should invest in gold proof sets versus the plain vanilla bullion version? You’re not alone. Many gold bullion investors often wonder which version of the two they should purchase. Proof? Or bullion? The answer depends upon your reason for wanting to purchase the coins in the first place.

Are You An Investor Or A Collector?

Typically, gold is purchased as a hedge against inflation, a declining dollar or as an insurance policy against financial catastrophe. Let’s use the American Eagle gold bullion coin as an example. Both the American Gold Eagle proof and bullion coin are the same size, and contain the same quantity and guaranteed quality of gold. Let’s look at the differences between the two types of coin sets:

American Eagle Gold Proof Coin Sets

1. Are special collector’s edition coins

2. Are produced in limited quantities

3. Struck at a higher quality standard

4. Comes pre-packaged in a protective blue velvet, satin lined case

5. Are shipped with a certificate of authenticity

6. Are available for sale directly from the U.S. Mint

If love to collect beautiful coins that have the potential to increase in value not only for its gold content but for its collectability, go with the proof version!

American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Sets

1. Value is determined solely by the current market price of gold at the time the coin is purchased or sold.

2. Are not purchased for their age or rarity

3. Are not available for sale from the U.S. Mint

4. Must be purchased from an authorized dealer

If your main goal is to purchase the American Gold Eagle coin in order to capitalize on the rising price of gold, with the hope of selling and making a profit down the road, go with the bullion version!

eBay can be a great place to find some of the rare, earlier dated gold proof sets. However, before buying any American Eagle Gold Proof Set online, please be sure the seller is reputable and has a high, positive feedback number!

American Buffalo Gold Coins – Precious Investment

Image : http://www.flickr.com

American Buffalo Gold Coins are best way of investment. I am trying to prove this:

During financial panic period the investments like stocks and bonds gets lost or have a major cut down in their values contrarily Gold, Silver, Pre-1933 Gold, and the finest Rare U.S. Coins have experienced growth during these same periods.

It is very safe to invest in gold when there is economic and financial instability all around. Gold lowers the investor’s overall risk if included in financial portfolios that is the reason it is supposed to be a proven asset diversifier. As we know rates are dependent upon the supply and demand ratio that is why gold is thought to be a good stand alone investment depending upon market conditions.

United States mint introduced the American Buffalo or the Indian Head, they were the first fine 24-karat gold. They are offered for sale through a network of Authorized Purchasers. This idea is simply the best for those who want to invest in gold and since the quality and purity of these gold is guaranteed by the United States Government it is an excellent investment idea without any risk.

From where can I get these? Participating banks, many brokerage houses and coin and precious metal dealers have made available these coins. The cost of these gold coins is $50 approximately as the current market price decides the pricing for these precious metal investment coins.

These were introduced in the year 1913 and show the native beauty of American West. On the front side you can see A Native American, who is the mixture of three chiefs from three different American Indian Tribes such as Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons can be seen who posed as models to sketch for Fraser and on the reverse side a buffalo is marked.

As there are two types of investors, conservative and aggressive. Gold if included plays a vital role in your portfolio. Conservative investors invest in blue chip stocks and bonds only whereas the aggressive investors invest in speculative investments such as growth stocks, future and options. That is the reason many financial experts say to include 5 – 10% of their total assets in gold because gold lays a secure foundation for a balanced portfolio.

Worldwide gold is seen as a tangible asset. This asset cannot be inflated away during financial recession or meltdown. You have complete freedom to buy gold, own it and transfer it without documentation. Whenever there is a financial panic and failure in the currency market gold can give you assured good returns.

It is really a good idea to invest in gold as its rates are rising steadily over the past 5 years. The introduction of these American Buffalo Gold Coins have made investors glad as they can get a $50 gold which is 24-karat purest gold available in the market. So make a smart move. Invest In gold with American Buffalo Gold Coins.

Famous African American Women Inventors

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Science is generally viewed as a men’s world. Females are rarely found tinkering around the laboratory or handling mechanical devices, much less inventing one and having it patented under their name. Patents are the proof of “ownership” of an invention and only the inventor(s) can apply for a patent. In the past, women were not allowed equal rights of property ownership (patents are a form of intellectual property) and many women patented their inventions under their husband’s or father’s names. In the past, women were also prevented from receiving the higher education necessary for inventing. Today, however, hundreds of thousands of women apply for and receive a patent every year. About 20% of all inventors are currently female and that number should quickly rise to 50% over the next generation.

Among these women inventors from the past to the present, there are African American women inventors. Their number, however, can not be exactly determined. According to EnchantedLearning.com, Sarah S. Goode was the first African American woman to have received a patent in 1885 (patent #322,177, approved on July 14, 1885). She invented the folding cabinet bed, a space-saver that folded up against the wall into a cabinet. When folded up, it could be used as a desk, complete with compartments for stationery and writing supplies. Goode owned a furniture store in Chicago, Illinois, and invented the bed for people living in small apartments.

The second African American woman to receive a patent was Miriam Benjamin who was a Washington D.C. school teacher. She received a patent in July 17, 1888 for an invention she called a “Gong and Signal Chair for Hotels”. Her invention allowed hotel customers to summon a waiter from the comfort of their chair. A button on the chair would buzz the waiters’ station and a light on the chair would let the wait staff know who wanted service. Miriam Benjamin’s invention was adapted and used in the United States House of Representatives.

On April 26, 1892, Sarah Boone’s received a patent (U.S. Patent #473,653) for an improvement to the ironing board. Sarah Boone’s ironing board was designed to be effective in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies’ garments. Sarah Boone’s board was very narrow and curved, the size and fit of a sleeve, and it was reversible, making it easy to iron both sides of a sleeve.

Perhaps the most famous African American woman inventor of all time is Madame C. J. Walker (December 23, 1867 – May 25, 1919). She was an inventor, businesswoman and self-made millionaire. Born Sarah Breedlove McWilliams C. J. Walker, she was an African-American who developed many beauty and hair care products that were extremely popular. Madame Walker started her cosmetics business in 1905. Her first product was a scalp treatment that used petroleum and a hot comb. Sarah later invented a system for straightening hair. She added Madame to her name and began selling her new “Walker System” door-to-door. Walker soon added a hair-growing ointment and other cosmetic products to her line. The products were very successful and she soon had many saleswomen, called “Walker Agents,” who sold her products door to door.

Many of these women grew up in a time when females and colored people were discriminated against. Their social status may have prevented them from getting an education but this did not stop them from exploring their world and finding ingenious solutions to everyday problems. Their innate intelligence and determination had brought them their personal triumph over adversity. Their inventions may not have survived into the 21st century and yet their pioneering spirit will live on in the present generation of women working in the fields of science and technology.

American English in the ESL Class – Learning the Differences Between British and American English

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Which English do you want to speak? There isn’t one, but several Englishes that people all over the world use to communicate. Of all the different styles of English spoken in the world, American English certainly dominates, being the language of Hollywood, computing and aviation. Some would even go as far as calling their language “American“, and why not? It has several important differences with my English, British. But for a foreign learner to say that they speak English and American is exaggerating somewhat. The biggest differences between British and American English are vocabulary items, just as there are regional differences in any language.

Learning American Words

If you have studied English in a traditional class, the chances are it was based on British English. Even American teachers have little choice but to use the resources available to them, and Oxford and Cambridge University Press dominate the world of ELT. If you are studying a course like English File or Headway and your teacher is American, you have a good advantage, as likely he or she will use his American vocabulary in conversation.

The best way to familiarise yourself with American vocabulary is simply to watch American TV and movies (films in British English!). Generally, you will be able to see from context what a word means, and link it to the British word you already know.

Pronunciation

There’s a famous song that highlights some pronunciation differences, the word “tomato” for example. Many of the differences in vowel sounds can be attributed to the change in stress patterns. In the US, “Iraq” has its stress on the first syllable, pronounced like “eye”. In Britain, on the other hand, the “I” is not stressed so it’s pronounced like the “I” in “it”.

Grammar

As for grammar, the good news is that Americans use less and less the dreaded present perfect – so you have one less thing to worry about. Words like “just” “ever” and “already” can be used with the past simple, whereas in English it’s the present perfect.

British: have you already seen this film?

American: did you already see this film?

The British generally have no problem with American English as they are used to watching American films (or movies if you prefer). An American, on the other hand may have a few difficulties understanding a Briton, especially if he uses slang words.

African-American Wedding Music

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What makes your wedding uniquely African-American?

It’s easy to adopt Western traditions. Even in Africa, brides are choosing to go with Western-style weddings.

You can preserve your heritage in your wedding with African-American wedding music. What does this mean exactly?

Most couples have their own taste in music and that usually means the popular music of the day. But let’s explore the roots of African-American music for your African-American wedding music…

Spirituals

Blues

Rags

Jazz

Swing

Perhaps these styles don’t seem like they will fit into YOUR wedding, but look deeper.

If you are having a Christian ceremony, the spiritual fits well into the wedding. The spiritual is one of the most significant genres of American music. Yes, many of them are mournful, speaking of hope beyond present day circumstances, but many are stirring and uplifting, professing their faith. Try A little more faith in Jesus…

All I want, All I want, All I want is a little more faith in Jesus

Whenever we meet you here we say, A little more faith in Jesus

What’s the order of the day? A little more faith in Jesus.

I tell you now as I told you before,

A little more faith in Jesus,

To the promise land I’m bound to go,

A little more faith in Jesus.

What an exciting way to start a joyous occasion!

The blues are another uniquely African-American musical form. Now you might think the blues are just way too depressing for a happy wedding day. Blues music reflected the newly-acquired freedom of slaves in America. There are many songs that have a sad origin, but in the context of a happy wedding, work well. Consider, for example, Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine from the movie “Show Boat.” Yes, she lost her man in the movie, but he’s all yours on your wedding day and the words convey a beautiful sentiment…

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly,

I gotta love one man ’til I die,

So I can’t help lovin’ that man of mine.

Rags or rag-time – another great African-American tradition. Ever heard of Scott Joplin? This pianist extraordinaire practically invented the idiom. If you saw the movie “The Sting,” you heard a lot of rags. This style predated jazz and reached its popularity in the first two decades of the 20th century. Most rags are upbeat and could work as prelude music, and would be fantastic during the cocktail hour or during dinner. You could hire a pianist to play a selection of rags.

Jazz is the epitome of African-American art and is fabulous African-American wedding music. All you need to do is hire a great jazz band and your reception will be awesome. And don’t forget that swing!

Jazz can work well in the ceremony as well. Embraceable You and The Nearness of You are great jazz vocal solos as the mothers are seated or when the bridal party is entering.

Drums – If you want something really exciting and truly African, why not process down the aisle to a traditional African drum beat with musicians dressed in traditional garb? Contact your local university music department, music union, or music store, and ask if they know of any African drum ensembles. Or do an on-line search for an African drum ensemble.

Make your wedding a true cultural heritage experience with African-American wedding music.
