Gunnar Optiks L6089/2-C006 Sphere Halogen Digital Performance Eyewear with i-AMP Lens Technology (Cloud) Now Sphere This! – Tom France – Seattle, WA
Wow, look at that title. Gunnar Optiks L6089/2-C001 Sphere Halogen Digital Performance Eyewear with i-AMP Lens Technology (Onyx). A lot of words which don’t really say much, but the name is not overly important. The real issue is starring at a bright screen all day long, and these certainly help with that. They took me about a week to fully adjust to, and when I take them off I realize the benefit of wearing them. The cold-cutting and harsh blueish-whites would still be attacking my eyes if not for the amber tint of these optics. I still feel the need to rub my eyes from time-to-time (usually associated with stretching and yawning, but not necessarily going to the bathroom), but the pain and strain from hours of starring is gone, as are itching and redness. Now my eyes are only tired when the rest of my body is tired as well. I find my eyes are able to endure longer than the rest of me, perhaps now I need a new chair, as well as diet and exercise.
One final thought: these will make you look like a geek. For me, that’s good in most situations.
First off, for full disclosure, I wear prescription glasses, so I had to get my Gunnars special order from an optician. If you’ve got good eyesight, be very glad, because the prescription variety cost a whole heck of a lot more. Still, they’ve been worth every penny.
I am sometimes at a computer for 18 hours a day, which used to lead to squinting and headaches. I have not suffered from a vision-related headache since I started wearing my Gunnars. Besides a noticeable lack of squinting, the frame and lenses are ridiculously light, so the pressure on the bridge of my nose and ears is minimal. The hinges are very well-designed; the springs apply enough pressure to keep the glasses held in place, but not nearly enough pressure to pinch.
The tint of the lenses takes a little bit of getting used to. Colors are much warmer with the Gunnars on, and the world looks almost alarmingly blue when they are taken off, so expect a couple minutes of adjustment time each way.
While they are designed for computer/digital device use, I have found them to be quite effective as night-time driving glasses. If you don’t wear prescription glasses, I doubt they will improve your vision at night, but the anti-glare coating on them is far more effective than any other prescription glasses I have used, so they’re an improvement for me.
The highlight of my experience with Gunnar has been their customer service. As I mentioned, the prescription variety are quite pricey (I usually get two pairs for the price I paid for one pair of Gunnars). About 2 weeks after I received them, I foolishly sat them on top of a box on my desk. They took a fall, lens-first, onto a rough spot of the desk, and acquired a terribly annoying scratch on one lens in the process. I contacted Gunnar to see if they could offer me any solution besides buying a new lens. They, in turn, contacted the store where I had purchased them and arranged for a one-time courtesy replacement of the lens. There was no warranty against this type of damage, so they were fully within their rights to say, “Sorry, I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do.” Instead, they responded immediately with better results than I would have ever expected.
Overall, I highly recommend Gunnars, though I would suggest finding them in a brick and mortar shop to try them on, first. The tint might not be your thing (especially if you work in an industry where color accuracy is a priority). If the tint is the only thing that you don’t like about them, they have another lens coming out soon that is designed for graphic artists (no colored tint), so you might want to explore those. Their website is easy to navigate, so that’s a good starting point. Gunnar Optiks: L6089/2-C006 Digital data streams at you all day, every day.
