Technology and Coping With Disaster

Natural disasters come in many shapes. From the incomprehensible carnage of last weekend’s tsunami in the Indian Ocean, to hurricanes and typhoons, to tornadoes and drought, our world deals with the horror of disaster as a normal part of our lives. Throw in a bit of human influence through wars, terrorism, or the threat of weapons of mass destruction, and our need to deal with and overcome calamity almost becomes routine.

Watching CNN and the news channels gives a near real-time view of disasters. While some may find this a bit macabre, it also shows our ability to quickly respond to major events, on a global scale. The same technologies that allow us to view the aftermath of a tsunami also allow us to quickly gather factual data on the extent of a disaster, and use that for disaster planning and response.

Organizations such as the Pacific Disaster Center, and the Asia Pacific Area Network try to assist regional nations to build better disaster planning models and response model through training and timely dissemination of critical information. Regional military organizations participate with each other on joint disaster planning (for other than wartime-related disaster) to organize their resources in response to a regional disaster, and can respond within hours to major problems.

While carnage on the scale of the Indian Ocean tsunami cannot be controlled within a day or a few days, the communications and real time information collection on the disaster will most certainly reduce the level of misery experienced by victims at a level that would not have been possible even 40 years ago. As aircraft and on-site persons (using satellite phones or other powerful mobile communicators) collect information on areas of Sumatra, Thailand, and other affected areas, the information is almost immediately being logged, evaluated, distributed, and prioritized among a number of emergency response centers operated by regional governments – as well as international relief agencies.

From the regional and international response centers coordination further occurs among members of organizations such as the Multinational Planning Augmentation Team. MPAT holds frequent disaster response exercises among member nations to ensure coordination lines and pre-planned responses are quickly executed. All MPAT member nations have access to central databases of planning information, available resources, and a “command center” mobilized when a regional disaster occurs.

Telecommunications and information technology are key components in our ability to respond to disaster. As real time information is collected, it is available immediately to all participants in the relief effort. Other technology – in particular military technology, can easily serve a duel use purpose in a disaster. The same troop transports designed to carry soldiers to war can carry refugees from a disaster. The same photo reconnaissance aircraft used to spy on enemies can provide a clear view of the extent of damage. The same technology used to collect electronic intelligence can locate attempts to use mobile phones, radios, and even audio signals of people stranded in remote areas. Infrared scanning used to identify enemy soldiers in a bunker or building can just as easily locate a family stranded in a jungle.

If you compare the current response to the Indian Ocean tsunami to the effects of tsunami damage following eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883, you can see the extent of damage from that disaster was not even known for several decades.

In most cases disaster cannot be predicted. We are making progress predicting earthquakes, hurricanes, and eruptions – however science is no closer to effective disaster prediction than we are in fully understanding the human genome. Through effective use of communications, information technology, and duel use military/civilian technology transfer, we are getting much closer to reducing the level of pain following an event.

2005 will be a big year in further exploiting the potential of Internet and communications-related technology. Given the positive moves toward regional cooperation in activities such as MPAT, we should be encouraged our governments understand the need and role of technology in planning – was well as responding – to regional disaster.

Ghillie Suit Tactics For Paintball, Airsoft and Hunting

When it comes to camouflage, there is no better tool than the ghillie suit. Because it resembles foliage, the suit allows you to blend into your natural surroundings and provides you a greater chance of hiding from and stalking your targets. Wearing one, however, does not make you totally invisible. Whether for paintball, airsoft or hunting, it’s vital that you know how to use a ghillie suit strategically so as to maximize its effectiveness.

First, let’s go through some basic guidelines common to all scenarios.

  1. Movement is the enemy of camouflage. Even if you blend into the background, a slight movement of your hand as you adjust your rifle or scratch at an insect bite can give away your position immediately. While in hiding, stay as still and as quiet as you can.
  2. Choose a suit that’s best suited for your strategy. Will you be standing, sitting or crouching most of the time, as in hunting? A full-body poncho suit is best for you. Will you need to move around quickly, as in the case of paintball and airsoft? Consider getting a fitted suit or one for the upper body only. And if you prefer to lie prone, choose one that’s open or padded in front, allowing you to crawl with relative ease and comfort.
  3. Customize your ghillie suit to mimic the terrain you will be on. Wearing camouflage that makes you stick out of your surroundings is self-defeating. Take some time to visit the place, note the colors and surrounding vegetation there, and apply these details to your suit.
  4. Make sure your equipment is also concealed. Your prey can’t mistake the straight line of a gun barrel for a branch. Blacken shiny objects with mud or matte black model paint, and consider investing in a ghillie rifle kit for your weapon.

Paintball and Airsoft

Using a ghillie suit in combat games like paintball or airsoft not just adds to the fun factor by providing a bit of realism-it also gives you an incredible advantage of being difficult to spot and shoot at. As mentioned, ghillie suits work best when the wearer is immobile, and thus are far more useful for defensive positions rather than attacking ones. Still, there are a number of tactics you can use to maximize your advantage.

One strategy is to lie in wait beside a path, wait for the enemy to pass by, then shoot them in the back. With the right timing, you can take down one or more opponents without blowing your cover. A variation of this strategy is to simultaneously have your companions ambush the opposing team once they’ve passed your area. The subsequent noise will mask your own shots, letting you hit your targets without giving yourself away.

In scenarios such as Capture the Flag, staying hidden is not as much a priority as tagging as many enemy players as you can. This is because your opponents will be most likely making a run for your flag. You’ll want to ambush and take them down as they come into view. Because surprise is on your side, you should be able to tag one or two before the rest can return fire.

One drawback of the ghillie suit is if the opposing team has already seen you in it before the game starts, they’ll know what to look for. Lessen the risk by taking deep cover amongst grass, shadows, and dense leaves. Whatever location you choose, just be sure you’re able to see around you and sight your targets.

Hunting

It’s the predator’s nature to use stealth, and what better way to achieve it than with a ghillie suit? These suits were a proven tool when they were first used by Scottish gamekeepers for hunting, and the years have not lessened their usefulness.

Hunting is an entirely different sport than paintball or airsoft. Here you’ll want to stay hidden as long as possible before taking the critical shot. Animals may not be able to think like paintball opponents, but they have superior senses and can spot a hunter long before he can bag his prey. Ghillie Suit [http://www.tacticalsource.com/stealthsuit.html] solve this problem by letting the hunter remain out of sight, lulling the animal into sense of security. Even if the hunter does make some noise when stalking, the disguise can buy him enough time take his shot while the confused animal assesses the threat.

As usual, preparation for the hunt is the key. Study the lay of the land before you begin your hunt. Be on the look out for good places to lie in wait for your prey. If you’re going to use other tools like hunting blinds, have them ready at the scene before you start your hunting expedition. Also, try to incorporate as much of the local color and flora into your disguise.

Remember that animals have a better sense of smell than humans, and they can detect your presence even if they cannot see you clearly. Solve this problem by hiding your scent with mud or even manure.

Westinghouse 03466 Nanolux 3-Watt G19 LED Bulb, White Dim and Blue – Rodger A. Blake – Huntington, WV USA
I had hoped to replace some 25 watt light bulbs with these, but they are much to dim and the light color is a distinct blue. Even with all five bulbs in place in the bathroom fixture, the bathroom was dark and “blue”. A definite no. I have placed these in outside fixtures out back to provide a guide to the door. They are not bright enough for much else. Not a 25 watt bulb replacement; maybe a 10-15 watt equivalent, and then there is the distinct blue color of the light. Summary, I don’t like it.

Crosman 1077 Air Rifles Review

The Crosman 1077 CO2 powered air rifle is just about the ideal.177 caliber pellet rifle for backyard target shooting and plinking. Styled after a military carbine its 12 round clip is housed in a removable magazine. You can fire all 12 shots as fast as you can pull the trigger. A 12 gram CO2 cartridge should be good for about 60 full velocity shots outdoors in summer temperatures or in your indoor range.

The 20 inch steel barrel is rifled. Accuracy is surprisingly good for an air rifle in this price range (under $70), and is comparable to what you could expect from European models costing two and three times more. The front sight is fiber optic. The rear sight is notched and is adjustable for windage and elevation.

You may want a more elaborate rear sight, but the simple one that comes on the gun is certainly capable of 1/4 inch groups at 10 meters. You can scope the 1077 rifle for $10 with the Crosman 0410 Targetfinder Rifle Scope but you should really use the Leapers Accushot 1″ Rings, Medium for just another $10 to keep the front sight out of view.

The Crosman 1077 is rated at 625 fps with a 7-8 gram pellet. Fast enough to hit accurately out to 20 meters and not too fast to safely backstop with cardboard (to prevent ricochet) and 1/2 inch plywood. The best.177 pellet for accuracy is probably the H&N Finale Match. Crosman Competition pellets available at Walmart and other big box stores will not disappoint either, and will help keep down the cost of shooting this fun air rifle. You will shoot a lot of pellets because it’s hard to put the 1077 down once you get started with it.

The 1077 is quiet enough to use in the backyard without riling the neighbors. It probably would not be heard at all from inside a house closed up for air conditioning. You get nothing even close to the sound of the ‘report’ of a rimfire firearm.

The stock and many other components are made from black, military grade synthetic. It’s a good looking rifle. At 3.75 pounds and 37 inches the Crosman 1077 can be safely and easily handled by just anybody old enough to be shooting responsibly. There is no recoil. Some commentors mention a displeasure with the trigger pull but my personal experience is with a pleasantly smooth pull right out of the box. Working the trigger with dry fires while watching TV will smooth it out even further.

You will not find a more universally liked.177 CO2 rifle for backyard target shooting and plinking. Everybody will want to shoot the Crosman 1077 when you hit the range, and nobody will be disappointed.
