What Are Your Aquatic Plant Control Options?

There is nothing individuals enjoy any more than a little plant killing, especially within their pond, or even their fishpond wherein it’d make huge issues for both the fish, and for you. Fish do not enjoy moving through a massive forest any more than the rest of us, so it’s best to control those plants at the bottom of your pond, before one of them turn into that man-eating plant from Jumanji.

An overgrowth of watery plants may create problems ranging from boat motors getting clogged, to undesirable results when fishing, to kids having a terrible time trying to swim through your pond. None of these are things you desire, therefore it is best to destroy the root of this issue before it starts.

You have a few choices available to you, choices that go from biological control, which is to say the use of fish that naturally govern the plant population, to covering the whole pond with a plastic lining…which would be a pretty dramatic step, but you know, whatever floats your boat.

So let us review a few of your choices, and then you can decide which one is suited for your situation, just remember that the following are just a very few choices, and you should speak with different pond owners, or experts to discover each and every method at your disposal.

Harvesting – Ridding yourself of the plants through manual labor, is of course a great option. However, if this plant isn’t situated on the shore, or isn’t|is not on the surface of the water, you may discover yourself buying some scuba equipment to swim down to the bottom without suffocating. If you don’t know the ins and outs of diving, or can’t hold your breath for a long time, it is encouraged for you to consult the professionals. Believe it or not, there’s companies who work to clean the bottom of ponds and lakes, so you will be in pretty good hands in that regard.

Chemicals – There’s a lot of chemicals available for you to use in order to rid yourself of the annoying aquatic life. Some such chemicals are Fluridone,2,4-D, Glyphosate, Diquat, Endothall. Naturally though, it’s never suggested that you utilize any kind of chemical to kill off your the plants, which is not dissimilar to the reason it is not suggested you toss a live wire into the lake to capture your prize fish. Utilizing herbicides may be detrimental for fish, as well as any other various life forms you might have within your pond. Use these carefully, or even better, don’t use them at all unless you have no other choice.

Dye – You could buy a huge selection of chemicals that will color the water, and thereby lower the volume of sunlight for any water plant life. It’s best to do such in the early spring for best results.

Lining – Lining the bottom of the body of water with a sort of plastic is also a viable option, this will stunt the development of any water plant life. Don’t forget that this may get costly, therefore take into account the size of the pond, as well as the amount of plastic you will require. Of course this is a good choice for compact fish ponds, though perhaps not so much for an entire lake in your yard.

Keep in mind that there’s plenty of methods to stop plant life from invading the pond, and to find the method that is good for you, consult a specialist or get together with some other pond owners.
