In midst of war, a child’s ‘glorious reception’

My Aunt Carmen’s first memory of America was the glorious reception she received upon her arrival.

It was the summer of 1917 and her family, her mother, father and little brother, had finally arrived in El Paso, Texas after a long train ride from Aguascalientes, their hometown in central Mexico.

As they pulled into the station they saw the buildings were all draped in red, white and blue bunting. A military brass band burst into patriotic marches while hundreds of tiny U.The wholesale air max China Edition is a testimonial and proof of that popularity.S.,We supply cheap gucci, cheap lv,dunk premium, nike af1 etc. flags were waiving in the hands of cheering well-wishers. Along the tracks, rows and rows of fresh-faced uniformed soldiers stood at attention in perfect alignment. For a wide-eyed, 6-year old little girl, it was an overwhelming welcome that would be engrained into her memory for the rest of her life.

As the family stepped off the train onto the wooden platform, Carmen tugged at her mother’s long dress and asked, “Is this heaven?”

Her mother smiled and simply said “No.”

She didn’t have the heart to tell her little Carmen that the revelry was not for her. The crowds were really there to see the soldiers going off to France.Any business that is just starting out and will not incur a lot of online sales yet, could consider third party merchant account The United States had just joined the fight in the First World War.

Like thousands of other families suffering the political unrest and religious persecution that plagued the bronzed land south of the Rio Grande from 1910 through the 1920’s, Carmen’s family fled the chaos and danger of Mexico to the relative safety of the United States.

From the time they arrived through the mid-1920’s, Carmen and her family followed the railroads north. They lived and worked in towns like El Paso, Texas, Columbus, New Mexico, Tombstone, Arizona and Abilene, Kansas.

The life memories of my Aunt Carmen span nearly a century. I always enjoyed any opportunity to sit with her and probe for the stories that would flow from her memory as fresh as if they had happened just a few days ago.

“Mommy”, as she affectionately came to be known to the scores of her extended family, witnessed the entire 20th century first hand. She lived the gamut of time that took her from the horse-drawn old west to the uber-fast paced high-tech era of today. A natural story-teller, she had a way of painting pictures with words that made the past come to life for her listeners. She was more than a living history book, she was a living newsreel.

Around 1925, the family moved to Los Angeles, which had beckoned as a place with plenty of work and opportunities for those wanting to make a new life. The Gonzalez family now consisted of Carmen, her younger brother Guillermo and three new siblings: Aniceto, Refugio and the newest baby, Lucita (my mother).

Pistons bidder shot for Delphi

Tom Gores isn’t a household name in metro Detroit, but he could be this fall.

He nearly bought Troy-based auto supplier Delphi Holdings LLP for $3.6 billion last year and now is rumored to have the inside track on becoming the next owner of the Detroit Pistons, although neither he nor anyone involved will talk much about it.

A source familiar with the situation said bids for the team were submitted by Gores and an undetermined number of other bidders around Labor Day to Citi Private Bank’s sports finance and advisory team, which was hired to broker a sale.

Current team owner Karen Davidson has said she wants a sale done by the time the season starts next month, so a decision is expected soon.

If he becomes the Pistons’ owner, Gores said his style would be hands-on, but not to the point of a Mark Cuban, the brashly outspoken (and often-fined) owner of the Dallas Mavericks.,Welcome to contract us and especially jordan 6 rings.

“I’m not looking to be a Mark Cuban. Let’s say active, but not that active,” Gores said during a telephone interview with Crain’s.

So, just who is Tom Gores, and how did he get so rich?

The easiest answer is he’s a global private-equity baron estimated by Forbes to be the 147th-richest American with a $2.2 billion fortune built by shrewd deal making, which combined with deep Michigan roots has him interested in the local National Basketball Association franchise and its Auburn Hills-based management company, Palace Sports & Entertainment.

Israeli-born Gores, whose family immigrated to Flint when he was a toddler in 1968, graduated with a construction management degree from Michigan State University in 1986. He is chairman and CEO of Beverly Hills, Calif.-based private-equity investment firm Platinum Equity LLC.

The company reported about $11 billion in revenue last year from its portfolio of 30 companies, many of which were troubled or in distressed sectors when Platinum inserted its turnaround teams to boost profitability.

Since Gores launched it in 1995, Platinum has done about 100 deals in 22 countries. Over the past five years, the firm has averaged $8 billion to $12 billion annually in revenue.

Platinum,,Designer Adidas Jacket collectors also look for great bargains of wholesale jeans on this international marketplace and us which has about 125 employees and regional offices in Boston, New York and London, looks at an average of 1,200 potential deals annually and completes maybe a dozen. “His reputation is stellar. He’s a tremendous talent and tremendous operative. He’s an old-fashioned, hands-on operator,” said Sam Valenti III, chairman and CEO of Bloomfield Hills-based Valenti Capital Management.

New York City-based Mergers & Acquisitions Journal magazine had Gores on its cover in April as its “Pro of the Year” for 2009.

While known now mainly in financial circles, becoming an NBA owner would elevate Gores’ public profile considerably.Any business that is just starting out and will not incur a lot of online sales yet, could consider third party merchant account

“I’ve been a little worried about it. At the end of the day, I like doing the things that I do, taking care of my own family and the Platinum family,” Gores said.replica nike

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Confident Warriors look to surprise

Jack Martinelli noticed a bit of a difference around Foxboro High School last winter. More and more Warriors were showing up in the weight room for offseason training.

The Christmas of 2010 may be arriving early for the FHS football team. Because back during the Christmas weeks of 2009, the Warriors were sweating. The Warriors were getting bigger and better.

“From December to August, it was one of our better years,” said Martinelli of the offseason preparation which has been most noticeable in the Warriors’ preseason camp over the past two weeks. “This is a big Foxboro team.”

Martinelli might lead one to believe that the Foxboro High Warriors are not a Hockomock League championship contender.

The Warriors will probably be spoilers in the race for the MIAA playoff berth. Any win will be a good win.

Foxboro High will have to be at its best just to be competitive.

Er, that is what others in the Hockomock League might project of the 2010 edition of Foxboro High School football. Whatever others think of Foxboro, fine. That even may be just what Martinelli hopes others might think of Foxboro come Friday night or Saturday afternoon.

Because the truth of the matter is that Martinelli and the Warriors are back!

Foxboro is big and bruising and balanced.

“I’ve been very pleased with what we’ve done in our scrimmages,,We supply cheap gucci, cheap lv,dunk premium, nike af1 etc.” said Martinelli of Foxboro, a few days before the 2010 season opener Saturday in Falmouth.

“There’s been a good tempo to the practices, we did a great job in the scrimmage against CM (Catholic Memorial),” mentioned Martinelli, somewhat expected considering that the Warriors believe that they have something to prove. With some 90 players in the program, this very well could be the upwardly mobile cycle of Foxboro football.

The Warriors, who won seven games last season, are more versatile on offense, with more depth and options to move the ball. On defense, Foxboro will be coming at you – because the Warriors’ line and linebackers are fearless.

“We can do a lot of different things,” said Martinelli of his offense, which will have three or four running backs each carrying the ball four, five or six times; two quarterbacks with experience throwing to some nice sets of hands; and an offensive line to ensure that it does occur.

And because Foxboro has better depth and balance, the Warriors will be posing multiple looks on defense – sometimes a four-man line, sometimes five. That is, a Foxboro defense which is most capable of creating havoc and turnovers.

So far, Foxboro has shown its potential on offense, on defense and on specialty teams in scrimmages against Catholic Memorial, Milford and Swampscott (the latter two in Foxboro). “For some reason, people kind of left us out of the mix (in the Hockomock League),” said Martinelli. “I think that we’ll surprise some people.Austpay.com is an international credit card processing service provider. We provide our customers bohigh risk merchant account and low risk merchant account solution. Merchants from all over the world are accepted”

There are no surprises up front for Foxboro, the Warriors are big and bold. “That’s the strength of the team,” said Martinelli of his linemen. Senior captain Connor Whalen (6-3, 260) moves from tackle to center. The tackles are senior captains Max Guy (6-5, 285) and Matt DiMartino (6-3, 255), all of whom were prime time players last year.

The guard corps consists of senior captain Mike Kelly (5-9, 210),,The online website has one of the most extensive selections of new and used Gucci wholesale jeans. junior Nick Hadge (6-1, 215) and sophomore Paul Nader (6-0, 210). And lending bulk to the line is senior captain and tight end Ed Lincoln (6-1, 205).

“It’s been a while since we’ve had guys that size,” said Martinelli. “Especially with three or four running backs getting the ball now,Take care of you new ed hardy jeans. we’re confident that those guys (the offensive line) can do the job.”

The running backs will be senior captain Bill Roberts (6-0, 200), senior Colby Flynn (5-10, 185) and a pair of juniors, Jeff McPherson (6-0, 215) and Brett Cresey (5-9, 155). “There’s a combination of size and speed there,” added Martinelli. “It’s not like one tailback will have to carry the ball 25 times.”

The incumbent at quarterback is junior Nick Sestito (6-0, 175), who started nine games in 2009. Senior Steve Fitzmaurice (5-10, 170) is just as capable and Martinelli won’t be hesitant to take advantage of his athletic skill.

In truth, Fitzmaurice will likely start as a wide receiver with senior Steve Bresse (5-11, 170) and lacrosse goalie standout Greg Stamatov (5-10, 160), a junior. “We can throw the ball very well,” said Martinelli, pleased with the success through the air during scrimmages. “Sestito and Fitzmaurice have a year under their belts too.”

Most of the Foxboro linemen will have additional duties on defense with seniors Jim Morse (6-5, 205) and Kevin Neal (6-2, 235) also in the mix with senior nose guard Nick Cuneo (5-10, 195).

Figuring in for linebacker duty will be seniors Dylan Buttimer (6-1, 175), Dan Gallagher (5-9, 175) and Dan Driscoll (6-1, 175) along with juniors Andrew Bronsdon (5-11, 180) and Mike Finery (6-1, 210).

In the defensive secondary as the starting group for the moment for Foxboro will be seniors Jake Soccorso and Dan Ross, along with Fitzmaurice and Bresse. Fitzmaurice will handle the punting and kicking for the Warriors as well.

“The kids relish that incentive,” said Martinelli of Foxboro being considered an also-ran. “I’d make Mansfield the favorite, but I’m very optimistic – that’s why we play the games.”
