If you’ve been waiting for the return of a post office in the Highland, Alpine and Cedar Hills area, brace yourself for bad news.
It seems no existing business wants to open one.

The last local business to run the postal unit was the Family Video, Book & Clothing store.
“After the closure of Family Video, Book & Clothing contract postal unit, the Postal Service solicited for another supplier in the Highland-Alpine area,” said Linda Pickett of USPS. “We contacted both city governments and the local retail businesses explaining the contract postal unit concept. When the solicitation was released, we received only one bid and a contract was awarded to Alpine City, which they later terminated.”
Late in 2008, the nonprofit Alpine Arts Council, which is not sponsored by Alpine city, was looking for a way to raise cash. The group asked Alpine to rent them, for $1 a year, a vacant space in Alpine City Hall so the group could open a joint library and post office. The librarian was slated to also be the postal clerk.
After hearing from residents who liked the idea of a local post office, in March 2009 Alpine agreed to the deal, saying the post office would be a great service to the community. For months, the Alpine Arts Council said it was preparing to open, but nothing ever happened. Finally, in late September of last year, the postal service gave up waiting and canceled the contract. The city said the Alpine Arts Council never offered a formal explanation, and members of the group declined to comment to the Daily Herald at the time.
And now, no other group or business has shown any interest in opening a postal unit, Pickett said.
Without a local physical location, residents of Alpine, Highland and Cedar Hills can use the American Fork Post Office. Pickett also suggested “the post office that never closes at usps.com, where customers can do virtually anything they can at a post office, including buying postage stamps, ship packages, request a free package pickup.
