Land Survey Intern II – Full Time – Colorado Dept of Transportation (Denver, CO)

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is located in the Region 6, Right of Way Plans/Survey unit of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). As a Land Survey Intern II, you will support the unit and the Professional Land Surveyors with the research, fieldwork, and preparation of right-of-way plans using legal descriptions and computer programs such as MicroStation.

The Land Survey Intern II:

· Works in a variety of environmental conditions and terrains in all sorts of weather.
· Works in close proximity to heavy traffic.
· Lifts or moves equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
· Is often required to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the day.
· Regularly climbs rough terrain to access survey monuments.
· Travels during the work day to assigned areas.
· On average, spends equal amounts of time in the office and the field.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction/supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor this position:

· Performs office and field land surveying services from initial project scoping and control survey through final right right-of-way plans and monumentation.
· Operates G.P.S. receivers and data collection survey equipment.
· Creates and drafts right-of-way plans and legal descriptions as directed to the specifications of the Professional Land Surveyor in responsible charge.
· Trains less experience staff in field surveying practices and methods.
· Checks consultant field work.
· Reduces and directs the reduction of data files from all types of field survey work using GPS processing software and MicroStation and INROADS software.
· Prepares land survey drawings using MicroStation and INROADS software.
· Determines land boundaries from deeds, plats, survey notes and other pertinent data.
· Interprets, plots and establishes the intent of legal descriptions to find any overlaps, gaps, or encroachments.
· Conducts in-depth research of county courthouse and title company records to determine complete and accurate ownership.
· Occasionally uses/operates tools including jack hammers, sledge hammers and hammer drills.

CDOT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Current valid enrollment as a Land Surveyor-Intern with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

SUBSTITITIONS

Valid current Professional Land Surveyor license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute for the required Land Surveyor-Intern enrollment.

The Exceptional Applicant will be a Land Survey Intern with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

· Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Major Responsibilities section.
· Comprehensive knowledge and experience using MircoStation, INROADS and/or other computer aided drafting design programs.
· Strong GPS skills.
· Knowledge and experience in researching property records to determine land boundaries and ownership.
· Knowledge and experience in land surveying.
· Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting right-of-way plans and engineering project plans.
· Strong oral and written communication skills including technical report writing and editing.
· Ability to partner with professionals, consultants, and staff, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities.
· Effective interpersonal, relationship building and mentoring skills.
· Excellent reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills and ability.
· Strong research skills.
· Strong attention to technical detail.
· Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities and projects in a demanding environment.
· Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations.
· Excellent customer service skills.
· Flexibility.
· Fluency in MS Office Suite, SAP, GPS processing software and the ability to quickly learn new software.

Necessary Special Requirements:

Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the day.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must be able to climb rough terrain on a regular basis

A Criminal background check may be conducted. This position is required to operate vehicles during the work day, so must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license with a driving record that does not exceed our application limits, which include:

· Seven or more violations while operating a motor vehicle in the last seven years, four or more violations in the last three years, or three violation in the last year.
· Any reckless driving violation within the last three years, or two or more reckless driving violations in the last seven years.
· Any driving offense within the last three years that was caused by alcohol or drugs, or two or more convictions for driving offenses involving alcohol or drugs in the last seven years.
· Suspension or revocation of driver’s license in the last two years, or two or more suspension or revocation in the last seven years.
