New Balance VIA mini step

Compact and Simple, But Must Be Calibrated – Summerrooney – LA, CA
I bought the Distance Monitor version of this product.

Mine did arrive sealed in plastic packaging, with an instruction booklet, which was adequate.

They come with a plastic strip keeping the battery from making contact so you can’t turn the thing on in the packaging. Unfortunately, when I pulled the strip out, I discovered that my unit was missing a tiny screw that’s supposed to hold the battery door in place. (I learned this from a puzzled, “This doesn’t seem right” exploration of the user’s manual.) Luckily I had a tiny screw from some old glasses that did the trick.

The unit clips unobtrusively to the SIDE of your waistband. Unlike any pedometers I’ve used before, this one is set up so that the little internal pendulum thingy must be worn at a right angle to your body. On your hip, not your navel. That’s probably a good thing, as I always felt dorky with a pedometer front and center, though I had found that wearing the center kind on my backpack worked well. Still not sure how to clip this to the backpack and have it be properly aligned, so for now I wear it on my waistband.

Wow! Is it ever fussy about calibrating. I still have a functional one on the backpack, that has been quite closely in agreement with mapped distances. But the Via was WAY off at first. Fortunately, you can adjust its sensitivity (3 settings, and it arrives set on most sensitive) and the stride length (anywhere from 10-80 inches, in 1 inch increments). I haven’t hit the ideal combo yet, but I’m getting close. The two control buttons would be small for less than nimble fingers or eyes, but having just the two makes it a simple device to operate.

I got my Via from Amazon for and handful of dollars and free shipping, so it’s hard to complain. I think I will eventually get it appropriately adjusted for me, but this will take persistence. If you have time, a measured route to walk, or another reliable pedometer to use to help you calibrate the Via, this simple little item may be okay for you, too. But it’s not likely to be a useful gadget straight out of the package.

Unsatisfied – Elana Ham – Seattle, WA USA
This pedometer should not be recommended as the first one you get! First of all, it comes without any instructions. If you do not know how to adjust it, don’t even try to do it by yourself- ask someone skilled to do it for you. I had to go to nearby sports shop and the sales manager helped me with basic settings. But we were not able to select “running” or “walking” mode- there is no proper signing on it. May tell that pedometer was quite accurate measuring distance and time but after a month the buttons became less sensitive and it became difficult to make changes. Think you may expect a better quality for this product- it was not 5-dollar pedometer and I would expect it functioning for at least 1 year. It is not counting steps after one month since I got it.

No start/on button! – MJC – Orlando, Florida United States
I bought this product brand new and found that there is no start/on button, so there is no way to turn on the device. I have googled this problem and found that others have complained of the same thing and have not received any answers to their question. I am suspecting that maybe a whole batch were manufactured without the start/on button and should be recalled. To be fair, I did not buy mine from Amazon but from another online website merchant. But wanted to at least share my review with others in case you are considering buying this product to pick another pedometer.
